Mazenod College Basketball – ACC Qualification Tournament

The Mazenod College Year 10–12 Boys A Basketball team produced an impressive performance at the ACC Qualification Boys – South tournament held on 4 March at Willetton Basketball Stadium. Competing against a number of strong schools, the team demonstrated excellent teamwork, defensive intensity and resilience throughout the day.

Mazenod began the tournament in outstanding fashion with a dominant 39–11 victory over Carey Baptist College. The team’s defensive pressure and fast transition play set the tone early, allowing them to control the game from the outset.

In Round 2, Mazenod continued their strong start with a convincing 33–17 win against Seton. The team maintained their defensive structure while moving the ball effectively in offence to create scoring opportunities.

Round 3 saw Mazenod deliver their most commanding performance of the day, defeating Carey Baptist College 38–8. The team’s disciplined defence and rebounding ensured Carey had limited scoring opportunities, while Mazenod capitalised at the offensive end.

In Round 5, Mazenod faced a tightly contested game against Guildford, narrowly going down 35–34 in one of the most competitive matches of the tournament. Despite the loss, the team showed great determination and fought hard until the final moments.

The boys responded strongly in Round 6 with a hard-fought 31–28 victory over Clontarf College. The game showcased Mazenod’s composure under pressure and their ability to execute in crucial moments.

In their final match of the day, Mazenod came up against a strong Ursula Frayne side and were defeated 27–21. Despite the result, the team competed with great effort and determination.

Across the tournament, Mazenod recorded four wins from six games and finished with a strong overall points differential. The team’s defensive intensity and teamwork were key highlights of the day.

ACC Junior Basketball Carnival

The ACC Junior Basketball Carnival was held on 3 March at Willetton Basketball Stadium, with the team competing in four challenging and highly competitive matches across the day.

The opening game against Corpus Christi College provided an early test. The first half was tightly contested, with the scores level at half-time, thanks to strong leadership from captain Xave. However, Corpus Christi’s defensive pressure proved decisive in the second half, restricting scoring opportunities and allowing them to pull away.

The boys responded well in their second match against St Norbert College, securing an impressive win. Hugo and Kad led the scoring, while Noah delivered a standout defensive performance that helped control the game.

Game three saw the team take on Seton Catholic College, widely regarded as the toughest opponent of the day. Facing a tall side with talented guards, the boys showed great discipline and composure, leading for much of the game. Zayde provided several highlight moments, but a dominant final ten minutes from Seton’s key player saw them edge ahead and claim the win.

The final game against Kennedy Baptist College saw the team finish on a high. Despite the scorching conditions and fatigue setting in, the boys played with freedom and confidence. With the pressure off, they produced their most complete performance of the day, securing a convincing victory against the specialist basketball school. Year 8 student Kundai was particularly impressive, delivering a double-digit scoring effort in the second half.

Across all four games, the team demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, resilience and teamwork. Their determination and positive attitude were evident throughout the carnival.

Graeme Wood Shield: Mazenod VS Newman

Mazenod delivered a commanding performance in the second game of the Graeme Wood Shield, defeating Newman College in a thrilling 2025 Grand Final rematch.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Mazenod posted an impressive 7/150 from their 20 overs. A. Seinor led the charge with a superb 64, anchoring the innings with confidence and composure. He was well supported by H. Saunders (25) and D. Biggin (15), with valuable contributions throughout the order ensuring a strong total.

In reply, Mazenod dominated with the ball and in the field, applying relentless pressure to restrict Newman College to 82 all out. M. Grabski (3/14) and S. Akkinapalli (3/10) were outstanding, setting the tone early with their disciplined bowling performances.

It was a complete team effort and an excellent win, as the boys now look ahead to their clash with Tranby next week.

Graeme Wood Shield: Mazenod VS Tranby

Mazenod travelled to Baldivis to face Tranby College in their third Graeme Wood Shield fixture. Tranby won the toss and elected to bat first.

N. Tomasini and W. Hohmann opened the bowling and despite delivering consistently good lengths, two dropped catches allowed Tranby to make a solid start. A change in momentum came when Akkinapalli entered the attack. An outstanding leg-side stumping by Coney, followed by a run-out, shifted the game decisively in Mazenod’s favour.

A steady flow of wickets followed, driven by disciplined bowling from Akkinapalli (2/7 from 4 overs) and Grabski (1/14 from 4 overs), supported by excellent fielding. Grabski also produced another remarkable catch, running back with the flight of the ball before tumbling to complete the dismissal, leaving spectators in disbelief. W. Hohmann (2/17) then cleaned up the tail, with Tranby all out for 80.

In reply, A. Seinor and M. Kelpage built a strong opening partnership. A. Seinor (36 from 30 balls) set the tone with an aggressive approach, including a trademark six over cover, while M. Kelpage (21 from 25 balls) provided steady support. The pair guided the score to 57 before the first wicket fell. D. Coney and M. Grabski then finished the job, with Mazenod reaching the target four wickets down in the 15th over to secure another impressive win.

It was a well-rounded team performance, highlighting both skill and composure across all facets of the game.

Graeme Wood Shield: Mazenod VS CBC

Yesterday afternoon, Mazenod travelled to CBC Fremantle for their Round 4 Graeme Wood Shield fixture.

CBC Fremantle won the toss and elected to bat first. W. Hohmann and J. Edwards opened the bowling, both delivering tight spells throughout the powerplay. CBC Fremantle steadied through the middle overs, before captain M. Grabski made the breakthrough, taking a wicket with his first ball.

With a set batter at the crease and a strong wind favouring one end, CBC Fremantle were able to build momentum and continue adding runs. They finished on an impressive 158 from their 20 overs. The pick of the bowlers were W. Hohmann (0/18 from 4 overs) and J. Edwards (0/15 from 3 overs), both of whom were highly economical.

The run chase was always going to be a challenge but one the boys were eager to take on. Requiring eight runs per over, a strong start during the powerplay was crucial. Opening batters A. Seinor and L. Crombie delivered just that, putting together an excellent opening partnership. A. Seinor scored 19 from 8 balls, while L. Crombie contributed 12 from 6 balls, setting a strong foundation.

D. Coney and H. Saunders then took control of the innings. Building on the platform, they rotated the strike effectively with consistent singles and twos, along with timely boundaries, maintaining the required run rate. In the latter stages of the innings, both players accelerated superbly, guiding Mazenod to the target of 159 with 13 balls to spare.

H. Saunders top scored with an outstanding 65 not out from 51 balls, while D. Coney finished unbeaten on 52 from 43 balls. It was a composed and mature run chase, securing Mazenod’s fourth consecutive win and an undefeated round-robin campaign.

Mazenod will now finish in top position and host the final in Week 9, with further details to be confirmed.

Herb Edwards Competition

The Mazenod College Junior Tennis team represented the school with pride and determination at the Tennis West Herb Edwards Tennis Competition, held on Monday, 9 March at Alexander Park Tennis Club. The event brought together strong teams from across the region, providing a full day of exciting and competitive tennis.

Our players began the day in excellent form, recording impressive victories over:

Perth Modern School

These wins highlighted the team’s depth, teamwork and resilience on court.

Despite their strong start, the team faced challenging matches against Applecross Senior High School and Bob Hawke College. These results ultimately cost Mazenod a place in the finals; however, the boys should be proud of their efforts and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Well done to all team members for their commitment, teamwork and positive spirit. A special thank you to the parents who came along to support the players. Your encouragement makes a significant difference and is greatly appreciated.

Mursell Shield Competition

The Mazenod College Mursell Shield Tennis team enjoyed a fantastic day of competition at Alexander Tennis Club, with students displaying impressive skill, determination and outstanding sportsmanship throughout the event.

Across the day, the team recorded two strong wins, along with two hard-fought losses. One scheduled match resulted in a forfeit, leaving the team just short of the results required to progress to the finals. Despite this, the players represented Mazenod with great pride, demonstrating excellent attitude and teamwork in every match.

The day provided a valuable opportunity for students to challenge themselves against strong opposition while continuing to develop their tennis skills in a competitive environment.

Congratulations to all players for their efforts and commitment. A special thank you to Mr Ballantyne for his support and assistance with the team throughout the competition.

House Cross Country

Next Friday, 27 March during period 5 & 6 is the Annual House Cross Country. All students are expected to participate unless injured. The race starts and finishes on the school oval. The 4km course involves 2 laps around the surrounding streets of the College.

The interschool cross country squad for the ACC Carnival later in the term will be selected from the results of this race, with the top 8 runners from each year group making the preliminary squad.

Each Year group starts in a separate wave, with the Y8s first off at approximately 1:45pm, followed by the Y7s, 9s,10s, 11s, & 12s.

BlueChip Timing coordinate the timing of the runners and the house results, with each student wearing a timing bib. Live results are available on their website. A direct link will be provided to families via email prior to the race.

Students are asked to wear their House Sports uniform to and from school on the day.

Parents and family members are welcome to attend to watch the start and finish of the race here at the school. There will be a presentation to the winning house, and to each year group Champion & Runner up in the quadrangle starting at around 3:00pm.

Tennis Training

Students interested in improving their tennis skills are invited to attend free training sessions on Monday mornings, commencing Monday, 9 February. Sessions run from 7:15am to 8:15am.

These sessions cater to all skill levels and are coached by a local tennis coach, providing a great opportunity for students to develop their game in a supportive environment.
