Mock Trials Round 1

On Tuesday, 10 March, both Mazenod teams were in action for Round 1 of the Mock Trial Competition, held in the Old Supreme Court Building.

This year, we have entered a Year 10 team and a combined Year 11–12 team. Both groups were involved in a common assault case in which 62-year-old history professor Charlotte Ashcroft allegedly clotheslined 19-year-old Ashley Rao off his e-scooter in a moment of rage while tending to her sunflower garden.

Both Mazenod teams were matched against Mandurah Catholic College, and it proved to be a challenging case to prosecute beyond reasonable doubt.

The Year 10 team, acting for the defence, performed remarkably well in their first-ever Mock Trial. The barristers demonstrated a strong understanding of the case and handled several firm challenges from the judge with confidence. Although the accused was found not guilty, the team did not secure the competition points.

Our senior team took on the role of prosecution. As an experienced group, they were a well-oiled machine, demonstrating strong courtroom etiquette and confidently addressing the challenges presented. Once again, the accused was found not guilty; however, Mazenod was deemed superior overall and secured the win against Mandurah Catholic College.

A sincere thank you to Mrs Tonon, Ms Flynn and Mr Lane for their support of the boys in the lead-up to the event.

Round 2 will take place in Term 2.
