Year Four

Over Term Two, Year Four have explored our history unit Changes over time in connection to Early Colonial Australia. Students engaged in different learning experiences investigating the experiences and perspectives of Colonists, Military and Indigenous people. We enhanced our learning with a visit to the Melbourne Museum.

Convict Letter Reflections

The task was to write a diary entry of us on the first fleet to Australia as convicts.

This was connected to our learning, because we were understanding the impacts and experiences of colonisation in Australia.

The first diary entry was about us getting caught and getting ready to go on the first fleet . The second diary entry was about the first fleet to Australia, the last diary entry was about the first fleet arriving in Australia.

It was fun learning about how the British people colonised Australia, and also the impacts, and what we can do to prevent it from happening again.

The Melbourne Museum

I really liked seeing the exhibition about the earth evolving. The possum cloaks were great because they told stories. The display where we saw the history of the indigenous people was really interesting.

Looking at the plants that the aboriginals used for medicines and tools was really interesting also.

Indigenous Guernsey

At the end of the unit and in line with Reconciliation Week and the Sir Doug Nicholls round in AFL students created their own Indigenous Guernsey. They inquired into current AFL Indigenous Round Guernsey and the symbolism behind each. Their designs reflect their own families or selves. They also added a message of solidarity in support of Indigenous Australians drawing on their knowledge and understanding developed through our text study reading ‘Always Was, Always Will be’.
