大 家 好 (Hello Everyone)! dà jiā hǎo
Over the past weeks, students have continued to explore Mandarin language and Chinese culture through a range of engaging activities. Students have created books, posters, puppets and creative writing pieces.
Foundation studen have explored traditional Chinese folktales and traditional stories using Chinese language to state the characters, settings, and storylines. Students then learnt about the traditional story telling form of Shadow puppets and have connected their language knowledge to different ways in which stories can be portrayed.
Year One students have been learning a sequence of sentences that state facts about their home and family, using these to construct an informative book in Mandarin. Students this week will have the opportunity to finish off their books and share it with a friend in Chinese.
Year Two students have continued to apply their knowledge of Chinese numbers and relevant Chinese time vocabulary when learning how to state times in Mandarin. Students have used this knowledge to create and publish a daily schedule poster.
Year Three students have continued learning about festivals and dates, applying their knowledge of Chinese numbers to state dates of important celebrations and commemorations. Students have used their prior knowledge of stating likes and asking questions to construct basic question/answer conversations.
Year Four students have built on their knowledge of personal questioning and answering to begin constructing a letter to a pen pal. Learnt phrases asking and stating their name, age, year level, family members and likes have been used in basic conversational interactions and are now to be put into letter form so that they can learn about a student from another school.
Year Five students have been investigating famous Chinese monuments whilst developing their ability to write simple factual information in Chinese. Students have used their number knowledge and learnt sentence starters and questions to state when the monuments were built, where the monuments are in China and five corresponding facts. This week students will be finishing off their informative posters.
Year Six students have been exploring timelines, migration and how the goldrush led to a big wave of Chinese migration. Students have been using their knowledge of this wave of migration to create a piece of creative writing that implements their high frequency Chinese word lists.
As we step into the final weeks of term we will move to a more cultural focus, celebrating The Dragon Boat festival and its cultural significance.
