Literacy

Next term students will be starting a new novel study. We will be reading the text 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown. This text will guide much of our literacy learning in Term 2 including, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and narrative writing. The book is about an intelligent robot is that is stranded on an uninhabited island after a shipwreck. To survive the harsh surroundings, she bonds with the native animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose.

In Term 2 we will be learning about persuasive writing inspired by 'The Wild Robot'. Students will craft letters that include clear arguments, supporting details and persuasive language to express a point of view.

Numeracy

To begin Term 2 students will be working on multiplication and division. This unit will include a focus on multiplication and division facts for 3, 4, 6 and 8 as well as identifying and continuing number sequences for multiples of 3, 4, 6 and 8.  Students will also be learning efficient strategies for multiplying three and four digit numbers by 1 digit.

Students will also have a focus on 2D shapes to begin next term. We will be exploring the similarities and differences between 2D shapes and 3D objects as well as recognising the 2D shapes that are the faces for 3D objects such as pyramids and prisms.

Inquiry

Next term students students will continue exploring our Inquiry unit, Water Cycle, learning why water is an important Earth resource. This unit will cover the following learning areas:

  • investigating how water moves through the environment (sky, land, and oceans).
  • learning key processes including evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and run-off.
  • making connections between the water cycle and changes in states of matter (solid, liquid, gas).
  • comparing saltwater and freshwater distribution on Earth.
  • recognising the importance of water to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, including the responsibility to care for water on Country.

Well-being

Next term in Year 4 students will be learning;

  • positive coping strategies

  • identifying and naming strong emotions

  • coping when we feel strong emotions

  • making sincere apologies

At Skye Primary School, we value every day of learning and work in partnership with families to support strong attendance, connection and wellbeing for all students.

Year 4 students are developing greater responsibility for their learning. Attending school every day helps them stay on track and continue building positive learning habits.

Celebration of Learning

Cross Country

Last week, our Year 4 students showed fantastic spirit and determination as they took part in the Skye Cross Country. Despite the cold conditions, every student gave their best effort, supported one another, and embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see so much encouragement and teamwork throughout the event. Best of luck to those students progressing to the next stage!
