Year 5/6

We welcome out families back to Term 3, in what promises to be a very busy term full of learning and school events. In the next couple of weeks we have our netballers heading to Melbourne to represent our school in the next level of Interschool Sport. We many of our cohort attending a basketball tournament and we have our whole school Spelling Bee. It was so lovely to have our families attend Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday and discuss their child's wellbeing and academic development.
Next week we welcome back Mrs T to 5/6B after 7 weeks leave. We would love to thank Ms Julia Roache for stepping in and taking over during this period.
Literacy
To begin our Literacy sessions this Term we have started the class novel 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman. The story focuses on the main character Felix, a jewish boy who is navigating his survival in war torn Poland in WWII. Our students have demonstrated great engagement, empathy and thoughtfulness when discussing some complex themes. We have also been writing information reports to demonstrate our understanding of a topic.
Maths
This term we have been learning all about fractions and percentages. We have been been learning about elements of fractions such as equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and finding a fraction and percentage of a quantity. We finalise the topic this week and move in our Measurement and Time Unit, where students will explore length, area, volume and capacity and 12 and 24 hour time.
Humanities
The topic for Humanities this term is Science as we study the unit 'A journey to Discovery'. This will culminate in an open classroom learning experience in the last week of Term 3. Students will engage in a number of science experiments over the coming weeks that looks at light, physics and forces.
Events and Electives
Term 3 is jam-packed with events with lots happening in Year 5/6 but all across the whole school community too. Last week we celebrated French Day and students participated in a range of activities. Our Preps celebrated 100 days of Prep today and their Year 6 buddies were there to celebrate and take part in a fun activity this morning.
Our Term 3 Electives began as well for the term. Students have chosen a specific activity to take part in weekly for the term. Yesterday we began work on the mural on the back of the 5/6A classroom. This will come together with the support of Dulux and Bunnings Waurn Ponds to bring some colour to our school. Students will also get the opportunity to take part in cooking classes over the term.
Thank you for all your continued support.
The Year 5/6 Team.
