Year 5 Update

Our Learning - Weeks 7 and 8

Maths

Over the next fortnight, students will complete their Division post-test, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate the strategies and skills they have developed throughout our Division unit.

We will then begin our new unit on Area and Perimeter. Students will explore the difference between area and perimeter, learn how to calculate both using a range of strategies and apply their understanding to solve real-world problems.

English

In English, we will begin our exciting new unit on Persuasive Texts. Students will explore how writers use opinions, reasons and evidence to influence their audience.

Our learning will link closely to our Inquiry topic on the Victorian Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade. Students will consider the question: Were the miners justified in rebelling? They will examine different perspectives and use historical evidence to help develop and support their own arguments about whether the miners were right to riot and ultimately take part in the events of the Eureka Stockade.

In our language lessons, students will also be learning about appositives, which add extra information about a noun, as well as apostrophes of possession and how they are used to show ownership in writing.

Inquiry 

In Inquiry, we will continue exploring Australian History through our study of the Victorian Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade. Students will investigate the events and perspectives surrounding the miners' rebellion and consider why the Eureka Stockade remains an important event in Australia's history.

SEL 

This fortnight, students will continue exploring Positive Gender Relations as part of the Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships program.

Throughout this topic, students will continue to develop their understanding of respectful relationships, empathy and communication. Students will also explore the importance of recognising and respecting differing opinions and perspectives, while considering how they can contribute to a safe, fair and inclusive community.

Year 5 Reminders 

A reminder that students are expected to complete their spelling and reading each day at home, as well as their additional homework task. This task may be completed over a two-week period and is designed to help students gradually build the independence and responsibility required in the higher year levels.
