Year 3 Update

Our Learning - Weeks 5 and 6

English

• Students have continued developing their handwriting by practising diagonal joins to f and s.
• Students have explored the prefixes uni-, bi- and di-, learning how their meanings can help them build, understand and use unfamiliar words.
• Students have strengthened their sentence knowledge by identifying subjects and predicates, changing subjects between singular and plural forms, and editing sentences to make their meaning clearer.
• Students have begun studying The Sugarcane Kids and the Red-Bottomed Boat, exploring how the Far North Queensland setting creates mood and contributes to the mystery.
• Through their reading, students have investigated clues, character actions, trust and teamwork, using evidence from the text to explain how the Sugarcane Kids work together to solve the mystery.
• Students have applied their understanding through paragraph and diary writing, including writing in first person from a character’s perspective and using events and clues from the text to support their ideas.

Maths

• Students have been refreshing their understanding of division by sharing quantities into equal groups and using arrays and counters to solve and record division equations, including problems with remainders. 
• Students have extended this learning to larger two-digit numbers by using MAB to share tens and ones equally, including exchanging tens for ones when needed. 
• Students have begun exploring halving as a division strategy, learning that finding half is the same as dividing by 2 and using this understanding to halve one-, two- and three-digit numbers.

SEL

• This term, students are focusing on Topic 8- Positive Gender Relationships of the Respectful Relationships lessons. 

• Students will explore:

  -Developing respectful relationships with others.

  -Understanding empathy and perspective-taking.

  -Recognising respectful communication.

  -Working collaboratively and resolving conflict fairly.

  -Appreciating diversity and inclusion within their community.

• In Week 6, it is Bullying No Way Week. Students explored how small acts can have a big impact, and how one small act of kindness can create a ripple of kindness. They looked at what kindness looks like, feels like and sounds like.

Inquiry

• Students reflected on their excursion to Healesville Sanctuary by identifying different types of vegetation and comparing the similarities and differences between the sanctuary and our school environment.
• Students explored how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples use changes in nature, including plants, animals and weather, to identify seasons and compared this with the European four-season calendar.
• Students investigated the importance of water and vegetation in creating healthy habitats and explored how human actions can damage or help protect environments.

Events and Reminders

Home work - A friendly reminder that students have a reading log and their multiplication charts in their homework books. It is an expectation that they read their fluency passages and practise their timestables at home, bringing their book in to be checked by their teacher on the designated day.

Book Week- On Monday 24th of August, we will be celebrating Book Week with our Book Week Dress Up. We will have our parade in the morning followed by an open morning in our classrooms for families to come, visit and complete a book week activity. We look forward to seeing all the wonderful costumes!
