Year 2 Update

Week 5 and 6 of Learning in Year 2, Term 3

We are SO excited for Lego Land. Our excursion is Monday the 31st of August. Please make sure you have provided consent and payment via Compass as soon as possible! 

During Weeks 5 and 6, students continued to engage enthusiastically in a range of learning experiences across the curriculum, developing new skills and extending their understanding in all learning areas. 

In Phonics, students explored how suffixes change the meaning and function of words. They learnt to read and spell words with the suffix -y, understanding how it changes nouns into adjectives, and applied both the doubling rule and drop the e rule when adding the suffix. Students also investigated the suffix -ly, learning how it changes adjectives into adverbs that describe how or when an action happens. Further learning focused on reading and spelling words where i and ie represent the long /ee/ sound, as in ski and chief. Students also practised using the y to i rule when spelling plural nouns, present and past tense verbs, and comparative adjectives and adverbs ending in y.

In Text Study, students explored a variety of information and hybrid texts. They identified the features of a hybrid text and discussed how the character Swifty responds to changes in the environment. Students developed their research and writing skills by finding and using facts from information texts to create their own informative pieces. They learnt how captions and labels help readers understand information texts and practised writing simple sentences using nouns and verbs. Students also located key information about a topic, explored migration patterns, and discussed the actions of characters and why they may need protection.

In Mathematics, students began their learning about division. Through hands-on activities, they learnt to make equal shares and record matching division sentences, including situations involving remainders. Students practised sharing collections equally and recording "shared between" sentences, while also using materials to model and explore the relationship between multiplication and division.

In Inquiry, students explored the materials and tools used in designed solutions and developed their understanding of the design process. They generated and communicated their own design ideas while learning that designers ask, imagine, plan, test and improve their ideas. Students also evaluated existing designs and suggested ways they could be improved to better meet people's needs.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students focused on the importance of safety and respect. They explored the idea that everyone has the right to feel safe, respected and free from harm and discussed how respectful behaviour helps people feel valued, included and supported. Through class discussions and activities, students considered ways they can contribute to a positive and caring school community.

We are proud of the effort, curiosity and perseverance students have shown throughout Weeks 4 and 5 and look forward to seeing their continued growth and success in the second half of term 3.
