Meet the Board

Tim Van der Veen

How many years have you been a part of the MECS community?

My association with MECS began in 1986 as a student (Yr 6-12), graduating in 1992. Roughly 15 years later that association re-commenced with our first of 4 boys beginning Prep in 2007. Since then, 3 of our boys have graduated Year 12 with our youngest currently in Year 11. So, I guess you could say in one way or another I have been associated with MECS for around 40 years.

How long have you been on the MECS Board and what is your favorite part of serving on the Board?

I think this is my 5th year serving on the MECS Board. I have many things I deeply enjoy when it comes to this, and since I cannot distill it down to one favourite, I will give you a number:

  • Being able to work with, admire and learn from the amazing leadership (Principals, Business Managers, Executive and other Staff leadership) that the Lord has truly blessed our school and community with during the time I have served in this capacity.
  • Working with and having fellowship with our other Board members who have such a deep love for MECS & Ranges TEC and zeal to see God glorified in this part of His Kingdom.  It's truly inspirational.
  • Witnessing firsthand the Lord's amazing provision and ongoing hand of blessing on our school.
  • Attending CEN conferences (e.g. AGM, ITEC) and experiencing how God is working nationally & internationally through Christian Education.

If you could holiday anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?

Anywhere there is no internet coverage, warm sunshine, beautiful creation to appreciate, great food, and most importantly - my wife Amy 😘

If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?

What a tough question....so many great choices. I would probably go with C.S Lewis - one of the great Christian thinkers who I am actually able to understand. He had such an amazing way of articulating Christianity, whether that be through fiction, apologetics, essays or speeches. I'm sure it would make for some amazing conversation and perspective altering discussions!

What AFL team do you support?

Collingwood. Are there other teams too?

What do you love most about MECS?

  • Our deep desire that an all of life for Christ world view permeates everything we do and remains as the heartbeat of our school. The outcome hopefully being, that each student that passes through our school comes away with an understanding that God has created them with a unique purpose in His Kingdom that enables them to glorify Him wherever He calls them to participate in His ongoing creative and redemptive work.
  • That the work we do as a community today will have Kingdom impact for generations to come. There is no better example of this than the founders of our Christian Schools - even though some are no longer with us, the result of their faith accompanied by obedience, all under Christ's Lordship, continues to shape and transform the lives of our children today.

Anything else you want to share?

The MECS vision is bigger than you might think. It's never too early or too late to get involved and we'll never have too many hands.
