Gawa Christian School Visit

A few highlights from across the school

The Senior MECS boys took on the visiting Gawa boys in an AFL and basketball game during their stay with us. In what started as two AFL teams of students who didn’t really know each other ended with a celebration of community. From half time in, the footy players swapped jumpers and enjoyed just playing together. There were hugs following goals and much banter throughout – irrespective of which end of Australia we came from. Having said that, it was acknowledged that Gawa have some very good football players! With energy left to burn, a basketball game followed with teams completely mixed as the fun continued. This time together was a blessing for all of us. It reminds me of that old line – if God is our Father, then we are brothers.

Gawa Students visit Senior Primary

It was a really cool experience to learn from the Gawa teachers about their style of art. Wendy’s father is an Indigenous artist who draws clouds as triangular shapes in repeated patterns. When you compare Indigenous artwork to non-Indigenous artwork, you can really see a difference. We also learned that different clans use different styles of art. We wrote words related to seeking justice, firstly in English, and then copied those words in their language. We watched videos of Gawa and how they learn, which is through watching, listening, and then doing. It looked like a lot of fun. It was amazing listening to the Gawa students speak in their own language, as SP students have been writing persuasive letters to the school Board, asking for more Indigenous signage around MECS. Together we have learned so much.
