Intermediate Boys Cricket

On Tuesday 14 October the Intermediate Boys Cricket team contested the SSV Southern Metro Region (SMR) Quarter Final at Aspendale Gardens. Our opponents Mt Eliza SC won the toss and sent us in to bat. Omid A (C9)  29 gave some early fireworks and assisted by Mohammad A (C9) pushed the score to 35 before disaster struck and both were dismissed quickly. Enter Sail Z 44 (G10) and Ibrahim N 46 (F9) who put on a devastating 60 run partnership in roughly 8 overs. A flurry of quick cameo innings by the remaining batsmen who all hit a boundary or two set a huge total of 8/153 of our 20 overs. The ground was very quick so would it be enough!

The Mt Eliza openers looked very comfortable cruising to 1/25 off 4 but a great run out by Mohammad A started the chaos. No Mt Eliza batsman really got going and they collapsed to be all out for 81.

This meant that DHS would progress to the SMR Semi-Finals.

On Wednesday 29 October the Intermediate Boys continued their 2025 cricket odyssey when they took part in the SMR Finals at Aspendale Gardens.

Our Semi-Final opponent, Narre Warren South won the toss and decided to bat. Their innings got off to a flying start due to some sloppy and impulsive fielding errors and some wayward bowling. At the fall of the first wicket the DHS boys regained their mojo and tightened the screws to restrict Narre Warren to 10/82 in the second last over. The highlight was an unbelievable outfield catch by Sail Z (G10). I’m still trying to figure out how he caught it?? The pick of the bowlers were Mohammad A (C9) 2/19, Sail Z (G10) 3/10 & Bhavesh I (C10) 4/9 wrapping up the tail.

Our innings started slowly with our openers having some trouble with the Narre Warren opening bowlers. Once they got set however, they really got going. Omid A (C9) 51 smashed the bowlers all  over the park while Bhavesh I (C10) provided the support with a patient and supportive15. We passed the target in the 11th over which allowed a brief rest before taking on McKinnon SC in the SMR Final.

After a quick lunch break we won the toss and elected to bat against McKinnon. Two early wickets and the departure of two of our key batsmen put us on the back foot and potentially posting a poor total but some clever hitting from Ibrahim N (F9) saw us post a target of 83. This looked somewhat defendable compared to the 50-60 we were potentially looking at.

The defense of our total again started off in sloppy fashion with some impulsive overthrows and misfields but, when defending a small total I guess you have to take some risks? McKinnon batted with discipline and approached our total for the loss of only 2 wickets but with 7 runs needed, the ray of hope shone brightly. Two run outs and a smart catch saw them in disarray and still needing 4 runs. The glimmer of hope was dashed with a boundary but left us asking the question, “If only we had another 20 runs to defend, what might have been?”. Bhavesh I (C10) was the pick of the bowlers with 2/11.

Thanks to all the boys who have committed to this cricket journey since early in Term 1.

To be Southern Metro Runners-up leaves us as one of the top 12 teams in the  State which is a fair achievement.
