This term, our VPC Numeracy students explored the world of probability through the Games of Chance project. After investigating the mathematics behind popular games such as dice, cards, and spinners, students were challenged to design and test their own original game of chance.
They analysed real player data from their classmates and evaluated whether their games were truly “fair”. The project not only developed their understanding of probability and statistics but also encouraged creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
From strategic ping pong toss to creative card challenges, students demonstrated that maths can be both analytical and entertaining!

Our Year 9 and 10 Design and Engineering Academy students recently participated in an exciting LEGO Robotics incursion, where they applied coding, engineering, and problem-solving skills in dynamic team-based settings.
Throughout the session, students were presented with a series of hands-on challenges designed to test both creativity and logic. Working collaboratively, they used either block coding or Python to program their robots to complete a range of engaging tasks – from animating a feeding bird, to designing an automated construction device, and even creating a fully functioning LEGO bumper car vehicle.
The incursion provided students with a fun and practical opportunity to explore real-world applications of coding and engineering, further strengthening their teamwork and critical thinking skills.
Here are the PBL mini golf designs created by Year 7 Fern students. They were done as part of the Maths and Science CAT, followed by the mini golf excursion. In Science, they had to apply their knowledge and understanding of forces and simple machines to their designs, while in Maths, they had to apply their knowledge and understanding of measurements and geometry. They worked in teams to design these wonderful models of mini golf courses and presented to the class at the end.

All Year 7 classes went on a very fun and helpful excursion with our teachers. The purpose of the excursion was to have fun and complete our last term's Maths and Science CAT as well as help with our fitness.
We played mini golf with our classmates which was very fun. It was a great excursion, in fact one of the best this year and a very compulsory part of our Term 4. This excursion helped a lot with our learning, we had to predict, calculate the angles, take ideas of how to make one for our own, and what simple machines to use. It was also part of our term 4 CAT in which we had to design a miniature mini golf course for our Maths and Science CAT. It helped us a lot as we got the chance to have a real understanding of what a real golf course looked like, what simple machines to use, where to put them, and how to make it. It was also for our health and skills that are very helpful for our future which include teamwork and focus.
Thanks to our Hakea teachers Ms Sutano and Mrs Hayes for looking after us and guiding us on how to play golf, making us laugh, and helping us when we were designing our own mini golf course.

To mark the end of 2 years working together as the Design Engineering Academy, we decided to make our last experiment a particularly fun one - the Mentos & Coke Experiment! The students applied their knowledge of the scientific method to find out what conditions would make the biggest reaction. Some factors we explored were the difference between diet and full sugar, temperature & the type of Mentos used. We also learnt that this is not a chemical reaction, but a physical one.
Well done Year 10s, it has been fantastic working with you!
