Building Strong Foundations: Fine Motor Skills in Prep
In Prep, we are busy building the essential skills that support students in becoming confident learners. One important area we focus on is developing fine motor skills — the small muscle movements in the hands and fingers that are needed for everyday classroom tasks.
Through a range of engaging and hands-on activities, students are learning how to use scissors safely and effectively, apply glue with control when pasting, and develop pencil grip through drawing, colouring, and handwriting. These experiences help strengthen hand muscles, improve coordination, and support students as they begin forming letters and developing clear, controlled writing.
We also incorporate fine motor development into our numeracy learning. Activities such as counting objects, manipulating materials, and representing numbers help students build both their mathematical understanding and their hand control at the same time.
These foundational skills take time, practice, and patience to develop. We are so proud of the persistence and effort our Prep students are showing as they continue to grow their independence and confidence each day.
You can support your child at home by encouraging activities such as drawing, colouring, handwriting practice, cutting, threading beads, or helping with simple tasks like opening containers or packing their bag.
Thank you for your continued support in helping your child build these important lifelong skills!
