Grade 3 Science Experiments: Exploring Solids, Liquids and Gases
This term our Grade 3 students have been investigating the different states of matter. Through hands on experiments, students explored how solids, liquids and gases behave and how energy can cause changes.
To bring this learning to life, students participated in two exciting science demonstrations.
First, we explored the famous Mentos and Coke experiment. When Mentos were dropped into a bottle of Coke, students observed a powerful eruption. This helped students understand how gas that is dissolved in a liquid can be rapidly released. The reaction creates a large amount of carbon dioxide gas, which pushes the liquid out of the bottle. Students were fascinated watching the gas escape and discussing what was happening at a molecular level.
We also completed an experiment using bicarbonate soda and vinegar. When these two substances were mixed together inside a bottle, the reaction produced carbon dioxide gas. A balloon placed over the bottle inflated as the gas filled it. This helped students see how gas molecules move and expand to fill available space.
Through these experiments, students were able to observe real world examples of chemical reactions and gas production. They discussed how solids, liquids and gases behave differently and how energy can cause particles to move and change.
It was wonderful to see students asking questions, making predictions and sharing their scientific thinking as they explored the fascinating world of matter.
