Wow, what a term of science our students have enjoyed at HEPS!

Geologist visit from Melbourne University

Last week a geologist visit from Melbourne University Education outreach visited our school. Students from grade 3 had an opportunity to learn about rocks and crystals and use high tech microscopes to aid their exploration.

Kids in Space

16 students from HEPS participated in the Kids in Space showcase last week. The students confidently discussed and  showcased their prototypes to better the life of astronauts in space. 

Scitech Mission Mars

Grade 3 and 4 have been developing a Mars lander over the past 5 weeks, learning about the conditions on mars, past missions and then designing and engineering a mars lander to achieve a gforce lower than 5. 

Science week

Students throughout science week were given the opportunity to join in a number of lunch clubs.  This year’s theme of Seeds of Science aimed to engage students in biological and earth science though the study of seeds, plants and animals. Students engineered animal models, made seed bombs and examined samples under microscopes.

CSIRO Robot recovery:

Students from grades 5 and 6 are participating in the CSIRO robot recovery mission considering the role of robots in geographic exploration of caves.  Students chose a cave of their choice, considered the conditions of their chosen cave, designed an exploration and used this understanding to inform the design of a robot of their choice.

Science Talent Search:

9 students participated in the Science Talent Search competition. We are awaiting their feedback from the judges. Each of these students from grades 5 and 6 submitted an independent project they should be proud of.  The submissions were across the categories of experimental research, scientific posters, online games and simulations and creative writing showcasing their understanding of the topic Seeds of Science.
