Learning in Year 3

Welcome Back to Term 3!

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing winter holiday. It has been fantastic to see the students return refreshed, enthusiastic and ready to jump straight back into learning. We have already had a busy and productive start to the term, with lots of exciting learning taking place across all curriculum areas.

Literacy

Our Year 3 students have begun exploring the wonderful world of poetry. So far, they have created acrostic poems using their names, colour poems that incorporate the five senses, and haikus, using descriptive adjectives to capture the beauty of each season. It has been wonderful to see students experiment with language and express their creativity through a range of different poetry styles. They are producing some excellent pieces, and we can't wait for them to bring their completed poetry booklets home later this term to share with their families.

We have also begun reading the sequel to our much-loved class novel, The Nothing to See Here Hotel – You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yeti. Students have eagerly reunited with their favourite characters and are already making predictions about the exciting adventures and hilarious chaos that are sure to unfold at the hotel. There has been plenty of laughter and curiosity as we read together each day.

Mathematics

We have hit the ground running in Mathematics by exploring angles. Students have been identifying right, acute and obtuse angles in fun and interactive ways. We used our bodies to create different angles, searched the classroom to find angles in everyday objects, and designed our own 2D robot characters before identifying and labelling the different angles within our creations.

We have now moved into multiplication and division, where students are strengthening their understanding of times tables and using fact families to solve multiplication and division equations. We have also been exploring arrays, helping students visually recognise the relationship between multiplication and division and understand how the two operations are connected.

Integrated Studies – Feather, Fur and Fin

This term, our Integrated Studies unit, Feather, Fur and Fin, has immersed students in the fascinating world of animals. We have been investigating how animals are classified into different groups, including mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds and insects, and identifying the unique characteristics that each group shares.

Students are developing their research skills by locating key information from a variety of sources, recording important facts and expanding their scientific vocabulary. They have already learnt and confidently begun using exciting new terms such as vertebrate, herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity grow as they discover more about the amazing diversity of the animal kingdom.
