Year 5

Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Families,

As we approach Holy Week in Week 9, students are reflecting on its significance and preparing for our final week of term. In Year 5, we are also exploring the Big Water Walk and learning how access to clean water impacts communities. It’s been a busy and meaningful term, and we look forward to finishing the term strongly in the last week.

Our learning this week:

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, our Year 5 students are exploring how access to clean water affects communities and learning how Project Compassion supports those in need through The Big Water Walk. They are considering the impact on children and families, understanding ways communities gain access to safe water, and reflecting on how they can show compassion and take action to help others.

English

This week in Year 5 English, students are practising handwriting and typing skills, identifying and using prepositions, and reading How Was That Built? with fluency and expression. They are expanding and combining sentences, using key words and phrases, and learning to plan and write body paragraphs for explanation texts.

Mathematics

This week in Year 5 Mathematics, students are learning to solve problems involving elapsed time, calculate area using grids, and interpret data from tables and graphs. They are practising strategies to solve word problems and explain their thinking clearly.

Integrated Studies

In Year 5 Integrated Studies, students are learning how migration connects Australia to other countries. They are exploring what migration means, identifying push and pull factors, sorting examples into these categories, and explaining how migration shapes connections between nations.

Social Emotional Learning:

In Social Emotional Learning, students are exploring personal and cultural strengths that help people manage everyday challenges. They are identifying qualities like resilience, kindness, and determination, as well as cultural strengths such as family traditions and community support, and learning how these strengths can guide positive actions.
