The Importance of Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep is one of the most powerful tools we have to support our children’s learning, wellbeing, and behaviour at school. Yet, in busy family life, it can sometimes be overlooked.

Why Sleep Matters

A good night’s sleep helps children to:

  • Concentrate and learn effectively – Sleep supports memory, attention, and problem-solving.
  • Regulate emotions – Tired children are more likely to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or frustrated.
  • Maintain positive behaviour – Fatigue can lead to impulsivity, conflict with peers, and difficulty following instructions.
  • Support physical health – Sleep is essential for growth, immune function, and overall wellbeing.

How Much Sleep Do Children Need?

As a general guide:

  • 5–7 years: 10–11 hours per night
  • 8–12 years: 9–11 hours per night

Consistency is key—regular bedtimes and wake-up times help children feel more settled and ready for the day.

Helpful Sleep Habits at Home

Here are some simple strategies to support healthy sleep routines:

  • Establish a consistent bedtime routine (e.g., bath, book, bed).
  • Keep bedtimes and wake times consistent, even on weekends where possible.
  • Limit screen time at least 1 hour before bed.
  • Create a calm, quiet sleep environment.
  • Encourage children to wind down with reading or quiet activities.
