Year 2 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

What we have been up to:

Term 3 continues to be exciting and full of learning! As part of our integrated unit on celebrations, we have been listening to our classmates' interviews, learning new vocabulary from books about celebrations around the world and enjoying the school celebrations of NAIDOC and Literacy Week. What a fabulous turnout of costumes. The children had a great time sharing their characters with their classmates and visiting all the doors.

Maths:

We continue to further develop our understanding of the connection between multiplication and division. Students have been using arrays to work out garden design problems for Queen Arraya. They explored the most efficient way to arrange a given number of veggies, fruit trees and flowers. Using informal and then formal units students have started learning about measuring the area of objects in squares. They then combined their knowledge of arrays and area to design a garden for Queen Arraya incorporating all the arrays already explored. Finally, they developed the best bunches and table design for a garden party celebration for Queen Arraya, using all their knowledge of arrays, making groups of and sharing.

English:

Students are now moving into the Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.3 and 7.4 sounds in phonics. These sounds include: suffix er as in teacher and camper, air as in fair, ere as in where, are as in scarecrow a-e as in gatea as in acorn, cicyce making the sound ‘s’ and g making the ‘j’ sound when followed by e, i, and y.

Students are enjoying exploring narratives, and writing stories about different celebrations. We have also been looking at sentences beginning with a subordinating conjunction - before, after, when, if, although, and even though.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

Students will continue learning about the similarities and differences between celebrations around the world and start a project where they get to plan an imaginary celebration.

In writing, we will introduce students to the ‘Writer’s Workshop’ and the chance to write any text type about anything that inspires them.

In maths, we will be looking at multiplication and real-world worded problems. Students will be starting a new unit on measuring volume and capacity. Lots of cooking and measuring would be great to support this learning at home.

Swimming for all students in Foundation, Year One and Year Two will occur in week 8 (Monday 8th - Friday 12th September). There will be no swimming on Tuesday 9th September.
