Physical Education: What a Week!
What an exciting week it has been for the students, the community, and sports at Thornbury Primary School! While there have been some challenges—like adapting to smaller spaces, dealing with noise and dust, and staying flexible with ongoing construction—our school community has truly come together to make the most of it. Here's a glimpse of what’s been happening:
1. In-House Tournaments and Gaga Game Fun
Our school ambassadors: Wolfie and Gus with the help of Santi and Luca, have been busy organizing in-house tournaments over the past two terms. The latest addition to these activities is the Gaga Game—and let’s just say, the kids have gone gaga over it! Built with David’s vision and supported by creative parents at the recent working bee, this game has been a fantastic addition to the school, especially during a time when space has been limited.
How’s it going? Well, it’s had a few "Lord of the Flies" moments, but overall, it’s been a huge success. As we continue, we’ll be introducing new rules to make the game more accessible to younger kids, and we’re also planning on some special beginner sessions to help boost confidence for those still getting the hang of it. I’ll be working with the Sports Ambassadors to ensure that equity and inclusion are at the heart of all our sports activities—including Gaga!
2. Athletics and Basketball Achievements
A huge shout-out to Keith Howden, our Athletics and Basketball coach, who has been training students for relay races and organizing games against Fitzroy Community School’s basketball teams. Currently, we have two teams, but we are eager to expand and involve more children in future matchups.
A special congratulations to Luca P, Marley W, Olive, Violette, Charlie, Frank, Oliver, Felix W, and the entire boys' relay team who received medals at the District Athletics at Coburg Stadium this week. I’m so excited about the talent emerging from our school, especially as our current group of 3/4s will soon be moving up into the 5/6 group. These kids are a strong sporting cohort!!
3. Fundraising and New Sports Gear
Thanks to your generosity, over $1200 from last year’s Fun Run was spent on new Aussie Rules jumpers and football tops. A massive thank you to everyone who donated!
As we begin thinking about this year’s Fun Run, we’ll need to consider where to hold it—stay tuned for more details!
4. What’s Coming Up?
Looking ahead, we’re already planning for next year’s swimming events in February. We'll start preparing in Term 4 to ensure everything runs smoothly and all spots are filled. Additionally, our 5/6 Sports Ambassadors are excited to host a fun sports day for the Foundation students on the oval!
5. Community Support and New Developments
A huge thank you to Erica for helping secure funding from the council to improve the facilities at Henderson Park. With this support, we hope to provide more equipment and create even more opportunities for children and the community to enjoy. Thank you, Darebin, and thank you, Erica!
If you have any ideas, contacts, or sporting skills you'd like to share or contribute to the school, please come see me—I’m always open to new ideas and opportunities for involvement.
