Tony Hicks’ Woodwind and Brass Soiree

Congratulations to all our students who performed at MGC’s Woodwind and Brass Soiree on Wednesday, 23rd October. It was a lovely night featuring a variety of music styles. Elita Hemley, Year 12, opened the evening with a performance on saxophone of “Improvisation # 1” from their recent year 12 Music exam program which segued into Jazz Band’s rendition of “Afro Blue” by Mongo Santamaria, featuring various improvised solos within Jazz Band, ending with Maddy Parker on the flute. “Mood Indigo” by Duke Ellington. Indi Lewis performed her original song, “Floating” before Trev Higgins (drums)and Alina (Sax) rocked it out together. Then the band played “Mission Impossible”, featuring saxophone solos from Alia Fritschy-O’Connor (Year 12) Rania Courtney on baritone sax, Victoria Lieu and Alina Rudd Hansen.

Lily Matsumoto (Year 7) did an impressive improvisation on the piano which segued into Abby England’s flute solo. Then the concert moved from jazz into classical repertoire, with the MGC Orchestra performing “In the Hall of the Mountain King”. We had a beautiful clarinet solo from Lucinda Buckle and Alia Fritschy-O’Connor performed one of her piano solos from her recent Year 12 Music exam program. Irene Tetaz (year 12) performed her Bach solo on the Viola from her Year 12 Music exam program. Then we had a stirring rendition of the theme from “Rocky’. The concert concluded with “Listen Here”. Irene Tetaz gave a beautiful speech acknowledging the work of Tony Hicks and the sense of community and connection that being involved in the music ensembles has given them over their last 6 years at MGC.

Thank you to Sammy Webber for the poster design, to all our Year 12 students who attended despite being on Swotvac, to all our parents for giving their children the gift of music, to all our dedicated students who attend their lessons and before school rehearsals on Monday and Wednesdays and finally, to Tony Hicks, who makes it all happen!  Thank you to Tony and the Orchestra for all their work throughout the year working on the professional score for The Sound of Music. You will be able to hear our Jazz Band and Orchestra at Presentation Night on Tuesday, 26th November for their final performance of the year.
