Check Whether You Need Casper
Many Victorian Initial Teacher Education courses require applicants to complete the Casper assessment as part of the selection process.
What is Casper?
Casper is an online assessment that evaluates personal and professional attributes such as communication, empathy, ethics and decision-making.
Check the Selection Requirements section of each VTAC course to see whether Casper is required.
Key Information
You must register at least 2 days before your chosen test date.
To be eligible for offers, you must complete Casper by the final test date for each VTAC offer round.
Some universities (e.g. ACU, Monash, La Trobe) use alternatives to Casper, but most require it.
Deakin University requires Casper but will reimburse the cost when you enrol.
If you are applying to multiple Education courses, sitting Casper is usually the simplest option.
Always read the VTAC Course Requirements carefully!

Please note: If you do not complete Casper (or an institution’s specific requirement), you will not be considered for teaching courses.
If you’re applying for a nursing or midwifery courses through VTAC, you’ll need to submit an English Language Proficiency Declaration once you’ve added any such courses to your preferences. This is a requirement to be considered for offers in nursing and midwifery and will become available on your VTAC account once you submit relevant course preferences
Choose the correct pathway (one of three options):
AHPRA Registration Pathway: If you already hold registration (Enrolled Nurse, Registered Nurse, or Midwifery), provide your AHPRA number. – this is not relevant to us.
Primary Language Pathway: If English is your primary language and you have completed at least six years of schooling (with at least two years at secondary level) where all instruction and assessment was in English in specific countries (e.g. Australia, NZ, UK, US, South Africa, Ireland) – this is what most students will select.
English Test Pathway: If you plan to or have already sat a recognised English test (like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, OET) by VTAC’s documentation deadline. You’ll need to upload your test results into your VTAC account. – for EAL and/or international students.
Submit any required supporting documentation. Depending on the pathway you pick, there may be extra documents needed. Upload them via the “Submit Course Application Documents” section of VTAC.
Why this matters:
Without the completed Declaration Form, you won’t meet all the requirements for nursing or midwifery course applications via VTAC.
Choosing the correct pathway and providing documentation ensures your application won’t be delayed or ineligible.
For more information on this requirement, see the English Language Proficiency Declaration page.
Folios May Be Required
Some courses require applicants to submit:
Art or design folios
Portfolios of work
Written statements
Creative responses
Auditions
Recorded performances
Requirements differ between institutions and courses. Check application dates carefully as folio submissions often close well before offer rounds.
You may need to complete:
Auditions
Interviews
Performances
Practical demonstrations
Additional selection tasks
These often require separate bookings and have strict deadlines. Always check the "Selection Requirements" and "Additional Requirements" sections of each course entry.
Before finalising your VTAC preferences:
Check every course entry individually
Read all selection requirements
Note important deadlines
Complete any required tests, folios or supplementary applications
Upload supporting documentation where required
Ask for help if you're unsure
Remember: Missing an additional requirement can mean you are not considered for an offer, even if you meet the ATAR and subject prerequisites.
If you have questions about course requirements, VTAC applications or pathway options, please speak with the Careers Team.
