Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

We made it! The end of term is here and we are so proud of how well the students have settled into the year, embracing new routines, expectations, and challenges with confidence and positivity.

It has certainly been a jam-packed term, and the students have navigated it all with enthusiasm and resilience. From tackling NAPLAN assessments to engaging in their regular classroom learning and inquiry projects, they have approached each experience with determination, and most importantly, with smiles on their faces.

Their effort, attitude, and willingness to give everything a go have set a wonderful tone for the year ahead, and we look forward to seeing this continue in the coming term.

Literacy

In Writing, Students have been exploring the concept of leadership by researching a leader of their choice and presenting their findings through an information report. Throughout this process, there has been a strong focus on the importance of rereading and editing their work, helping students to refine their ideas, improve clarity, and ensure their writing is accurate and engaging.

In Reading, Students have been developing their comprehension skills by engaging with a range of texts in both digital and non-digital formats. They have explored how meaning can be interpreted across different types of texts, while also building their understanding of leaders in a variety of fields. This has supported students in making connections between their reading and writing, as well as deepening their understanding of leadership in the real world.

Unit of Inquiry

Throughout the Term, Students have been engaging in meaningful reflection around their roles as leaders within our school community. They have taken time to think deeply about the qualities they already possess, the different ways they show leadership, and the unique leadership styles that make them who they are.

As part of this process, Students also explored what they feel passionate about and the kinds of change they would like to make, both within the school and beyond. These thoughtful reflections encouraged them to consider how even small actions can have a positive impact on others.

To capture their thinking, each Student created their own “Leader Profile.” This profile showcases their strengths, values, and aspirations, and serves as a personal reminder of the kind of leader they strive to be. It has been wonderful to see the honesty, insight, and ambition that students have brought to this task.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Students have been exploring the concept of ‘Space’, with a focus on transformations such as translation, rotation, and reflection. They have engaged in a range of tasks designed to challenge their thinking and deepen their understanding of how shapes can move and change within a space.

Alongside these rich learning experiences, students have also participated in warm-up games that reinforce key concepts in a fun and engaging way. These activities have helped to build confidence, strengthen their understanding, and support students in applying their knowledge in different contexts.

Harmony Day

Students celebrated Harmony Day with great enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see so many people proudly dressed in their cultural clothing. The day served as a meaningful reminder of the rich diversity within our Saltwater community, and the importance of celebrating who we are. It also gave us the opportunity to reflect on both our differences and the many similarities that bring us together as a community.
