Year One

This week in Year 1, students have been enthusiastically engaging in a range of rich literacy and numeracy learning experiences.
Reading:
In Reading, students focused on developing their visualising skills through the poem The Green Giant. They listened carefully to descriptive language and created detailed drawings to show what they imagined while reading. This helped students understand how visualising supports comprehension.
There was also a strong focus on reading fluently by using punctuation to guide expression. Students practised reading aloud with appropriate pauses and intonation, paying close attention to full stops, commas, question marks and exclamation marks to help bring the text to life.
Phonics:
During Phonics, students explored rhyme through word families including –ot, –op, –og and –ox. They practised segmenting words into onset and rime to support their reading and spelling development.
A highlight of the week was creating short, funny stories using –og words. For example, students enjoyed creating sentences such as “The fog was on the log.” This activity supported both their creativity and understanding of rhyming patterns.
Writing:
In Writing, students learned about procedural texts. As a class, we made playdough and then worked together to write a procedure outlining the steps we followed. Students focused on sequencing events clearly and using time-order words.
Students also created a “writer’s notebook seed” around the idea of how to be a good friend. They then used their ideas to write their own procedures, explaining the steps needed to be a kind and supportive friend. Across all writing tasks, students continued to practise using clear sentences and appropriate punctuation.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics, students continued to build their understanding of place value by breaking numbers into tens and ones. They used a range of concrete materials to represent numbers and demonstrate their thinking.
Students also enjoyed rolling numbers with dice and representing them in different ways, helping to strengthen their understanding of how numbers are composed. These hands-on activities supported students in developing confidence with two-digit numbers.
Harmony Day:
We also celebrated Harmony Day this week. It was wonderful to see students dressed in cultural clothing or wearing orange to show their support. Students listened to stories, shared about their own cultures and learned about the importance of inclusion and belonging. It was a special opportunity to celebrate that everyone belongs in our community.
Kind Regards
