Year Three

Hello families,

What a fantastic Term 1 it has been! It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of the term. Our Grade 3 students have settled in beautifully, built strong friendships, and shown a great enthusiasm for learning. We are so proud of all the effort and growth we’ve seen so far.

Reading

In Reading this term, students have been developing their skills through read and retell activities. This has helped them to better understand texts and explain ideas in their own words. We have also been focusing on learning to read like writers, where students look closely at how authors structure their stories and use language to engage the reader.

Additionally, we have been exploring autobiographies, which has been a very engaging unit for the class. Students have learned about different individuals and how they have risen to success, as well as the challenges they faced along the way. Reading these real-life stories has helped students understand perseverance and see how people share their journeys in their own words.

Writing

In Writing, students have been exploring the features and structure of autobiography texts. They began by planning how to represent who they are through a pic collage, helping them generate ideas about their personal experiences. They have been reflecting on significant moments from their lives and learning how to organise these experiences in a clear and meaningful sequence. Students have been focusing on writing in the first person and using descriptive language to express their thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences.

They have also been developing their ability to include key details such as time, place, and events to make their writing more engaging and authentic. Through drafting, revising, and publishing their work, students have taken pride in sharing their personal stories with their peers while strengthening their skills in creating well-structured and expressive autobiographical texts.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, students have been developing and extending their understanding of place value, with a focus on building strong foundation knowledge of the number system. This includes making, naming, and recording 4-digit numbers. They have also been learning to compare and order numbers using estimation strategies on an open number line. Additionally, students have been practising counting forwards and backwards in ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. Through hands-on tasks and visual activities, they have been making and renaming numbers to deepen their understanding of place value and apply key skills in meaningful ways.

Inquiry

As part of our Who We Are inquiry, students explored the values that guide their choices and actions. They participated in a diamond ranking activity, where they identified and prioritised the values they believe are most important.

Students then worked collaboratively to collect and analyse class data, reflecting on the values they demonstrate in their daily lives. This learning experience encouraged thoughtful discussions about respect, responsibility, and empathy, and helped students understand how their beliefs and values influence their behaviour and relationships with others.

Harmony Day

Students then worked collaboratively to collect and analyse class data, reflecting on the values they demonstrate in their daily lives.

Our school community came together to celebrate Harmony Day with great enthusiasm and pride. Students and staff dressed in orange and wore cultural attire to recognise and honour the rich diversity within our school.

We also held a gold coin donation fundraiser and are thrilled to share that we raised over $1,000. These funds will be used to purchase new books for our school library.

Thank you to everyone for your generous contributions and for making the day so meaningful. Together, we continue to celebrate respect, belonging, and unity in our community.
