Year Four

Dear Year Four families,

It has been a vibrant and rewarding first term in Year Four, with students settling in confidently and embracing the exciting step up into the middle years of primary school. Throughout the term, students have shown enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to challenge themselves across all areas of learning. It has been wonderful to see friendships strengthen, independence grow and students take increasing responsibility for their learning. We are incredibly proud of the positive mindset and resilience students have demonstrated as they continue to develop as capable and reflective learners.

Leadership Opportunities & Student Conferences

Throughout the term, many students stepped confidently into leadership roles across the school. Opportunities such as leadership conferences and student voice initiatives allowed students to strengthen their communication, collaboration and decision-making skills. It was inspiring to see students representing their peers, sharing ideas and developing a deeper understanding of what it means to lead with integrity and purpose.

Unit of Inquiry

During Term 1, students worked towards concluding our first Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme "Who We Are," where they explored how the people we choose to admire reflect our personal beliefs and values. Throughout this unit, students have developed an understanding of how beliefs and values influence the way people think, act and interact with others. They have engaged in thoughtful discussions, reflected on their own perspectives and made connections to real-world contexts.

To conclude the unit, students demonstrated their understanding by creating and presenting posters, videos, and PowerPoint presentations, etc., that reflected their learning and application of key concepts.

Reading

In Reading, students have been focusing on consolidating their understanding of character traits, beliefs and values within texts. They have explored how characters’ actions and decisions are influenced by their perspectives and experiences.

Students have also been developing their fluency and expression through engaging in Readers Theatre. This has allowed them to practise reading with accuracy, pace and expression, while building confidence when reading aloud and working collaboratively with peers.

Writing

In Writing, students have been learning to create engaging and interesting leads that capture the reader’s attention. They have explored different ways to begin their writing, using descriptive language and creative techniques to hook their audience.

Students have also been developing their skills in recording factual information. They have discussed how to organise information into meaningful categories when researching and writing informational texts.

This work has supported students in understanding how to structure their ideas clearly and effectively for the reader.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been learning to carefully read and interpret problems, selecting appropriate strategies to solve them. There has been a strong focus on explaining and checking their thinking, encouraging students to become more confident and reflective problem solvers.

Students have also been developing their understanding of place value and partitioning, using these skills to break down numbers and apply efficient strategies when solving problems.

As we move into Term 2, students will continue to build on their reading, writing and mathematics skills while beginning a new Unit of Inquiry. We look forward to supporting students as they continue to grow as confident, capable and curious learners.

We thank families for their ongoing support throughout a successful first term.

Harmony Day

Students enthusiastically participated in Harmony Day, celebrating diversity, inclusion and respect for all cultures. It was wonderful to see students sharing aspects of their own backgrounds and learning about others, helping to build a strong sense of community within our classroom. These experiences supported our understanding of acceptance, belonging and the importance of celebrating differences.
