Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,

It has been a busy, engaging and rewarding first term in Year 6, with students embracing new challenges, developing independence and demonstrating strong commitment to their learning. Throughout the term, students participated in a wide range of academic, leadership and wellbeing opportunities that supported both their personal growth and confidence.

Leadership Opportunities & Student Conference

Throughout the term, many students stepped confidently into leadership roles across the school. Opportunities such as leadership conferences and student voice initiatives allowed students to strengthen their communication, collaboration and decision-making skills. It was inspiring to see students representing their peers, sharing ideas and developing a deeper understanding of what it means to lead with integrity and purpose.

Beach Program - Student Reflection

One of the highlights of this term for me was the Year 6 Beach Program at Williamstown Beach. We participated in a range of practical and engaging activities focused on beach safety, teamwork and building our physical confidence. Through experiences such as nipper boards, first aid scenarios and beach games, I felt that I developed resilience and independence while learning valuable life skills in a real-world environment.

At Williamstown Beach, we had an amazing time. My favourite activity was the nipper boards. My coach gave us a challenge — we had to flip over into the water on our boards, and whoever flipped the fastest won.

On the second day of the beach program, it was meant to be a rainy day. Thankfully, it only rained during our last activities. One very engaging activity we did was practising CPR on a dummy. Our group decided that the dummy’s name was SpongeBob, which was quite funny.

We also learnt some very important skills. We learnt First Aid and were taught how to securely wrap a bandage and how to use an EpiPen®. Because I have an allergy, I was able to explain to others how to use an EpiPen®, and everyone got a turn to practise using the training device.

One memory that I will certainly keep is when, on the second day of the beach program, the bus driver played several songs and everyone was singing together.

Summer Sport

Summer sport teams were selected during the term, with students showing enthusiasm and commitment as they began training in preparation for their upcoming gala day in May. Training sessions provided opportunities for students to develop teamwork, refine their skills and build confidence as they worked towards representing the school.

Unit of Inquiry

During Term 1, students successfully completed our first Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme Who We Are, where they investigated how transitions in life shape who we are. Students explored identity, change and personal growth, reflecting on how new experiences and challenges can influence who we become.

Towards the end of the term, students began our second Unit of Inquiry under Where We Are in Place and Time, exploring how historical events have shaped how the world looks today. Students began developing research skills, examining historical perspectives and making connections between past events and present-day society.

Reading

In Reading, students developed their research and comprehension skills through historical fiction and informational texts. They practised identifying cause and effect relationships in historical narratives and began recording key ideas using structured note-taking strategies such as Cornell Notes and graphic organisers.

Writing

Students focused on developing historical narratives, learning how to plan, draft and structure engaging stories based on real historical events. They explored how to build suspense, introduce complications and craft meaningful resolutions using precise vocabulary and historical detail. By the end of the term, students had begun drafting their narratives, creating strong foundations for editing and publishing in Term 2.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students explored elapsed time through real-life contexts such as interpreting timetables, planning journeys and analysing itineraries. They practised calculating start and finish times to the minute and explaining their reasoning using a range of strategies. Extension groups also investigated time zones, further deepening their understanding of time as a practical and mathematical concept.

Looking Ahead

As we move into Term 2, students will continue refining and publishing their historical narratives while extending their inquiry learning through deeper research into significant historical events and perspectives. We look forward to supporting students as they continue to grow as confident, reflective and independent learners.

We thank families for their ongoing support throughout a successful first term.

Kind Regards,

The Year Six Team
