Year 1/2's

We have had another busy few weeks of learning in our classrooms! 

Literacy

As part of National Simultaneous Storytime, students enjoyed reading Luna Roo. We used the story to explore characters' feelings and practised retelling important events from the text. Students did a fantastic job identifying emotions and discussing how characters might be thinking and feeling throughout the story.

For the remainder of the term, we are working with the much-loved book The Day the Crayons Quit. Students have been learning about persuasive language and identifying how authors convince readers to agree with their point of view. They are now planning and writing their own persuasive letters from the perspective of classroom items, which has led to some very creative and entertaining ideas!

In Writing, we have been focusing on compound sentences and building our understanding of nouns, verbs and adjectives. During Phonics groups, students have been working hard to improve their reading fluency, handwriting and decoding skills while learning new letter-sound correspondences. We have also placed a strong emphasis on reading and writing high-frequency words to support both reading and written expression

Mathematics

Students have thoroughly enjoyed our hands-on Mathematics unit exploring mass, volume and capacity. They have been using balancing scales, comparing objects through hefting, and investigating mass using plasticine. We have also explored capacity through practical activities involving water and sand, while developing estimation skills. Some students have begun exploring metric units of mass and capacity and applying these in real-world contexts.

For the remainder of the term, we will be moving into a Patterns unit. Students will investigate repeating patterns, identify the unit of repeat, explore pattern rules and strengthen their skip-counting skills by 2s, 5s and 10s.

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing, students have been learning about stress management through our Kimochis program and the Respectful Relationships curriculum. Together, we have been identifying what stress can look and feel like and exploring a range of healthy coping strategies to help manage big feelings and challenging situations.

Excursion

One of the highlights of the term was our excursion to Maldon, where students enjoyed travelling on a historic steam train and learning about the local Gold Rush history. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect our classroom learning with real-life experiences and create some special memories together.

Cooking 

1/2J has been cooking up a storm in the kitchen. We made our own pasta and students had a great time practising using a butter knife to display safe cutting skills. We loved the tomato sauce as well!! As usual, thank you to our amazing adult helpers that we couldn’t do this program without!

Gold Rush Projects 

Thank you to all of the students and families who completed the Gold Rush projects. It was amazing to see students present their projects with pride and talk about competing them with their families. We loved all the different displays!
