Reading and Writing
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Noni the Pony, we incorporated the much-loved story into all of our literacy learning. Before reading, we carefully examined the front cover and made predictions about what we thought the story might be about. We also explored new vocabulary from the text and challenged ourselves to use these words in our own simple sentences.
Our writing activities were inspired by pictures from the story, and students worked hard to put two complete sentences onto paper. The determination shown throughout the classroom was incredible, and it was fantastic to see students confidently seeking help when needed. We were so proud of everyone's efforts and willingness to give it a red-hot go!
As part of our discussions, we also explored what makes a story engaging. We learnt that stories often include a problem and a solution, and we practised sequencing the important events that happened throughout the story.
Mathematics
Our mathematics focus over the past few weeks has been addition. This week, we concentrated on learning about "Friends of 10". Students consolidated their understanding through a variety of hands-on activities, including games, craft tasks and the use of mathematical manipulatives. We have been developing new skills in identifying the missing number in our Friends of 10 number sentences and are becoming increasingly confident in our understanding of number relationships.
Steam Train Excursion
Our brave and adventurous Prep students recently embarked on their very first school excursion aboard an historic steam train. There was great excitement as students explored the old cabins and settled into the comfortable seats for our memorable journey through Maldon.
One of the highlights was meeting the conductor, who carefully checked our tickets by punching a hole in each one before sliding the corridor doors closed. Students loved looking out the windows and watching the world go by, with plenty of smiles, laughter and excitement along the way.
A big thank you to the Year 1/2 students for inviting us to join their excursion. We had an absolute blast and created memories that we will treasure for years to come!
