Debating

Debating

During the course of the last two terms, the Debating Teams at Kilbreda have been very busy debating and competing against other schools.

The Kilbreda Debating Team consists of three divisions. We have the Year 9 D-Grade represented by Ella Bater, Lillibeth Carter, Olivia Fenech, Isabelle La Prade, Francesca Malignaggi and Maddison Selacki.

Year 10 C-Grade which consists of Juliette Benton, Sophia Bryant, Chloe Dwyer, Alexandra Mackiewicz, Molly Menihane Pegg, Erifilli Rayias and Samantha Xu.

Finally, we have the Year 11 B-Grade who are represented by Josephine Rees, Alaska O’Leary, Teagan Stewart and Lisa Chy-Long.

The teams have debated on a multitude of topics with varying degrees of difficulty and complexity. We have competed against many schools in the area,  including Noble Park Secondary, Haileybury College and Mentone Girls Grammar, just to name a few.

Some of the topics that have been debated upon during the course of the two terms have been for the D Team, “That convicted criminals should not be allowed to publish accounts of their crimes” and “That all political parties should have quotas for female candidates”.

The C-Grade team has debated topics such as “That police should always carry Tasers rather than guns” and “That we should abolish political parties.”

The B-Team grade have mainly had secret topics, with the team only knowing the topic an hour before the debate. A prepared topic we had was “That the government should have access to citizen’s encrypted messages” and for one of our secret topics we had “That the government of Australia should make everyone become vegetarian ‘.

I would like to thank Mrs Johnston for organising the teams and putting aside time in her busy schedule to meet up with us every other lunchtime. I would also like to thank the debaters themselves for taking the time out of their busy school lives and using their spare time to be a part of this great extracurricular activity.
