AUGUSTAS BUIVIDAS SAILS INTO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Year 7 student, Augustas Buividas, is currently in Costa Brava, Spain, preparing to represent Australia in the 2023 Optimist World Championships.

The ‘Optimist’ is a small single-handed dinghy, sailed by young people up to the age of 15.  Augustas starting sailing when he was 9, commencing his sport on Albert Park Lake during a short holiday program. Today, he trains every Sunday at the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club with a round trip taking 3 hours.

This is not Augustas’ first World Championship. In 2022, he sailed in Turkey for his birth country, Lithuania, but from the end of 2022, Augustas has been representing Australia in international events. In March he claimed the Victorian State Champion title along with the Victorian Youth Championship (Optimist class) in April.

Augustas will compete against approximately 270 participants from 60 countries, all top 5 junior sailors. We wish him every success in Spain and look forward to hearing all about it when he returns.
