Celebrating Achievement
Our netball stars shone bright again on Friday at the annual Bentley 7s Netball Tournament. Congratulations to both the junior and senior teams who went undefeated and took home the winner's trophies. Well done to Lila Hodge who was named the senior MVP of the carnival. Thank you to Mrs Tindall, Ms Gibney and Mrs Mizzi for coaching and umpiring.
Congratulations to Year 8 student Shyla Jago who participated in the Turtle and Lamb Head Trail Race last weekend and placed 1st for the 6 km distance. This was a great achievement with steep climbs and descents across the distance. Congratulations Shyla!
Congratulations to our Year 7-9 girls’ and boys’ hockey teams who represented the College at the BDO Senior Hockey Carnival. The boys team WON the junior division, with the girls team making the grand final, drawing nil all and then losing to St Monica’s on a goal countback. The students represented the College with pride and determination. Thank you to Peter, who coached the girls team, and Mikala Duda for running a training session with the teams.
St Mary's congratulates Jackson Cater who recently signed up as a School Based Apprentice with Zappala Diesel . Jackson will be studying a Cert III in Engineering-Fixed and Mobile Plant Mechanic. All the best with your apprenticeship Jackson
Congratulations to two St Mary's students who have been nominated in the 18U division Cairns Netball Top 5 MVP for the season. The MVP is voted by coaches throughout the season. Ella Stevens and Monique Moore, St Mary's is proud of you!

Well done to all the students who competed in the Marlin Coast Netball Carnival last Friday. Congratulations to the junior girls' netball team who went undefeated across the day and finished 1st after defeating St Monica's in a close final. Also, outstanding results from our senior boys' team who placed 2nd in the boy's competition. Thank you to our student umpires, and to Mrs Tindall, Ms Gibney, and Mrs Mizzi for coaching.
Ollie Van Rees raced at National Cross Country Championships held in Adelaide. He raced 4km in very cold and muddy conditions with the top runners of each state in Australia and the top runners of New Zealand. There were 120 elite athletes in Ollie's race. Ollie placed an outstanding 36th in all of Australia and New Zealand. To make it to this level of competition is a huge achievement.

Two St Mary’s Catholic College teams participated in the 7/8 QAMT Mathematics Challenge held at St Augustine’s College.

Congratulations to Team 1 - Hanae Morris, Angel Webster and Elia Fitzgerald who placed fourth in the competition. These students will be progressing to round two of the competition.
Congratulations to Lily Slade (Year 7) who participated in the Port Douglas 48km Medio Fondo on Sunday, completing the ride from Palm Cove to Port Douglas in 2 hours and raising $555 for the Breast Cancer Foundation in the process.

Congratulations to Sophia Burgoyne, Year 8 who achieved her Junior Black Belt in Taekwondo on 14th September. Well done Sophia!
Congratulations to Leila McLean, in Year 10, who competed in the recent Education Perfect Spelling Championships. Leila came fourth out of over 30,000 students in Australia and New Zealand, winning an Elite Certificate and 50-dollar GiftPay voucher.
During Week 10, a team of Year 8 and 9 students attended the Caritas Earthcare Youth Summit at Newman Catholic College where they unpacked Pope Francis’ letter, Laudato Si, which focuses on the care of our common home. They heard from a range of speakers about taking action to preserve and rejuvenate the natural environment. Junior Prefects, Ellena Kim and Koko Wilson, played key roles in organising the summit and took on MC roles for the day.
Caitlin Jackson (C) (Year 11), Jessica Haines (Year 11) and Charlotte Jonsen (Year 10) competed at the Netball State Titles at Nissan Arena from 18-20 September. The girls played so well for the Mendi Rays North team, finishing 7th overall. Charlotte was also excited to be selected in the 17U QLD squad, to be considered for the state team to compete at the National Championships next April. Congratulations!

During the school holidays Paige McDonald, Izzy Dunstan, Andrew Oxford and Edan Mattinson attended the Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) in Brisbane with Open Conservatorium, Griffith University.
Paige and Izzy were in the Betty Beath choir with Jenny Moon as Conductor. Andrew and Edan were in the Percy Grainger Wind Orchestra with David Law as Conductor. Such a valuable experience for these students.
Congratulations to Charlie Pike, Adrian Leighton, Beau Frazer, Lacey Walters, Georgia Welsford, Amelia Arcidiacono and Manager, Mrs Alison Frazer, who represented Cairns Hockey at the QLD State Championships over the holidays. Adrian Leighton (Year 9) and Lacey Walters (Year 9) were selected in the QLD U15s squad, which is an enormous accomplishment. We are all so proud of you!
Over the school holidays, six St Mary's students qualified for and competed at the QLD Junior State Championships for Artistic Gymnastics in Brisbane. All students learnt a lot and had a positive experience against tough competition.

Last Term, Joel Mundie presented Principal Wayne Wood with a memento of his fantastic achievement, representing Australia in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Joel participated in the 50 Free S7 in Birmingham. We are incredibly proud of you, Joel and will treasure this gift. Central Cairns Swimming
The September school holidays were a busy time for Ngaire Ross (Year 10). Ngaire attended the U16 Softball State Championships in Rockhampton on the first weekend, as part of the Townsville team, placing 5th at the tournament. She then finished the holidays by attending the U18 Softball State Championships on the Sunshine Coast as part of the FNQ/Gold Coast team, which finished 3rd. Well done, Ngaire.
Congratulations to Lyla Pendrigh (Year 7) who represented QLD at the Australian U13 National Hockey tournament in Hobart. Lyla's team won the gold medal and Lyla was awarded the coaches award for most improved player. Her QLD Cinders team remained undefeated scoring 26 goals for and only 3 against. She had an amazing time, learnt lots and made great friends. Well done Lyla! We are so proud.
Congratulations, Kiera Jackson, Year 11 and Sophie Jackson, Year 8, who both recently competed at the NQ Championships in Townsville, along with other St Mary's students. Sophie and Kiera were selected to compete at the National All Schools Championships in Adelaide in December. They also qualified for the National Athletics Championships in Brisbane in April 2023. Well done to these two sisters for making St Mary's proud.
