Mathematics

Wow? What an extremely busy term this has been. Today we are just under 91% through the term. That’s less than 10% to go. We’re down to the last Tim Tam in the packet, the last slice in the family pizza, and the last 4km in the marathon.

Speaking of marathons, at the 2006 Commonwealth Games held here in Melbourne, Kerryn McCann won the women’s event in 2 hours 30 minutes and 54 seconds. That’s running 42.195 kilometres in less time it would take you to watch any of the 'Lord of Rings' movies which are 3 hours 48 minutes, 3 hours 43 minutes, and 4 hours 11 minutes respectively.

The year the Commonwealth Games were held in Melbourne, Term 1 was only 6 weeks long to allow families to enjoy the Games. So, 15 years ago, we would have finished both Term 1 and the school holidays and be days into Term 2. But if we were in 1986, the last year of a three-term school year for Victoria, we would still be going until 9 May.

These random facts all demonstrate the presence of Mathematics in everyday life and heading into Term 2, we will be starting some co-curricular activities for students who are keen mathematicians. The Mathematics teachers have been throwing up lots of ideas and we’re just fine-tuning our plans, so please keep an eye out next term for the exciting things to come!

Wishing you all a restful break.
