Girton Netball Club Grand Finals 2022

Our Grand Finals campaign started on Friday night with Girton Rubies taking on Kangaroo Flat Football Netball Club in Section 4. Despite our best efforts with some outstanding defensive pressure being applied by Eva Broadbear and Olivia Ciancio, Kangaroo Flat were too strong taking the game 30-18.

Girton Diamonds in Section 3C had a very successful season and finals campaign. With coaches Rose Kennett and Eliza Oxley at the helm, the Diamonds were able to defeat South Bendigo Leech 39-28.  All players contributed to the win, with drive provided from Xanthe Breen in the mid court and accurate goaling by Dulee Siriwardana and Zoe Dean.

Girton Gold finished on top of the Section 2A ladder and went straight through to the Grand Final. Their opponents two weeks later were once again South Bendigo Arnold who came out on top 30-28. Despite Girton’s best efforts, a late surge from South Bendigo allowed them the win. It was a tough, physical match and every player on the court should be proud of their performance. Congratulations to coach Mrs. Fisher and the Girton Gold team for an outstanding season of netball.

The Section 2B Grand Final saw South Bendigo Bruhn play Girton Silver - and what an outstanding game it was.

At the end of the fourth quarter, both teams had delivered some exceptional netball for the huge crowd watching the game. This was reflected in the scoreboard, with both teams scoring 23 goals. It was a draw. Extra time was needed to determine a winner. Two five-minutes halves were played providing more outstanding netball from both teams. At the end of this time on period the scores were still level at 29 all.

The teams had to continue playing until one team had a two-goal advantage. After 1 hour and 20 minutes of gruelling netball, Girton Silver were Premiers with the score at 37-35. What a thrilling match to watch. Congratulations to Mrs. Peter and the Girton Silver team for this well-deserved Grand Final result.

Girton’s final Grand Final was on Saturday morning with Primary Grade 6B team Girton Yellow playing Falcons Flash. This was a repeat of the Qualifying Final two weeks earlier. Falcons won that match convincingly, but Girton Yellow were able to turn that result around under the guidance of coach Ms. Elke Holmberg. Girton Yellow defeated Falcons Flash 14-8. Well done team!

Thank you to all parents, siblings, grandparents, staff and everyone else who came along to support our teams playing in their Grand Finals. What a marvellous year of netball. Thank you to all players, coaches, team managers and Primary Carers for making it such a successful season.
