Year Nine Programme

Year Nines Learn First Aid Skills

On Tuesday, August 30th, students in the Year 9 Programme rolled up their sleeves and undertook a First Aid Training course here on Campus.

The aim of the course was to prepare students with real-life skills in the event that they are a first responder in an emergency situation. This training is highly sought after in applying for casual work – especially life guarding and working with younger children.

The students learnt basic CPR skills, including how to use a defibrillator. They learnt about Anyphilaxis and how to administer an epipen, as well as offering assistance to a range of other first aid situations including bandaging wounds, assisting stroke and heart attack victims and how to provide the right support in various other emergency situations. Student engagement and participation was excellent on the day and the students now look forward to receiving their certificates. We hope that they never have to use the skills learnt, but should they need to, they will be well prepared to offer the right support in an emergency situation.

History comes to life at Girton Grammar School!

On Thursday September 8 the Year 8 Girton Grammar students enjoyed a day of Medieval mirth where Medieval society came to life through a range of activities.

Students explored more than 1000 years of medieval history through its changing military technology, which also changed the culture and politics. Kitted out in armour ranging from the early Viking and Germanic warriors to the more advanced Norman Knights, and armed with battleaxes, long swords and crossbows, students were able to get a feel for the time and experience the reality of being a medieval Knight.

Students investigated the rise of the archer from peasant hunter to professional soldier and took a turn at showing their own skills with the bow and arrow.

Crime and punishment proved to be a popular session with our resident Lord and Lady being selected to punish the peasants as they pleased. With time in the stocks, whipping, hanging and trial by ordeal featured as the favoured choices of the day and it was generally agreed upon that the peasants got a rough deal in the Manorial Courts.

A session on games and education proved fun with some "cat and mouse" chasey and a version of Blind Man Bluff.

After a peasants feast of vegetable soup and bread, our day ended with a Tournament which allowed students to train as squires (a Knight in training) and take on a Medieval Knight to show their skills.

Thank you to the many staff who helped out on the day. It was a wonderful immersive experience for our Year 8 historians and afforded them the opportunity to experience life through the eyes of a medieval peasant, priest, knight or noble.

Talk Money

On Tuesday the 6th of September, Karlis from Talk Money conducted an hour long workshop for the Year 9's as part of their 2026 Programme. As many students are reaching the age of employment, this seminar on financial health is an important part of our Health unit. Karlis specifically spoke about “Making Money Work”, exploring ways to make money, and how earning money in line with values and life goals can help build future financial independence. He aimed to teach the students practical skills including navigating the workplace, understanding worker’s rights and understanding pay rates. This will be followed up with another hour-long seminar in the first week of next term, where students will learn more about superannuation, and managing tax and payslips. It was great to have Karlis visit and we are grateful for Talk Money to be a part of the Year 9 Programme.

Lachlan Tune: “Karlis’s speech was very informative, and it really helped me understand the different categories of jobs, the pay that these three got, all the rights that we have as employees, and all the other things he talked about. Very helpful.”
