Year 7 Basketball
On August 30 we had 17 Students compete in the Regional Athletics Carnival at Meadowglen across both track and field events.
It was fantastic see Jacob Hebden compete in the Hurdles and do so with ease, taking out first place with a time of 14.84 seconds . This is the first time in many years that we have had a student compete in this event. Jacob will now move through to the State Athletics in Term 4. Also finishing first place and moving through to State is Zoe Hargreaves 800m, Naimh Tabit 1500m, Sophea Xintaropoulos Shot Put, and Yahia Eissa 1500m Walk.
Congratulations all of our Regional Athletics Team, and we wish those competing in the State Championships the best of luck.
The senior girls soccer team went to state on the 30th of August. We only had 10 players for the day, but we were still able to play some very competitive games. Our first and second games were against Kurnai College and Trinity College. The defenders and midfielders worked very hard to keep the other teams from scoring and both games ended as a nil all draw. Our final game was against Brighton College who had some very skilled players with powerful shots. Northcote had some attacking efforts but with one less player up front we struggled to convert them into goals. The game ended with Brighton winning 5-0, but all the girls still enjoyed it. Some special mentions go to Eva Mandy as goalkeeper, who despite never having played soccer before made some great saves, and Jemma Billing who did a fantastic job captaining our team through to states. The year 11 girls would also like to thank the 6 year 10 girls who played up an age group. We wouldn’t have been able to compete without them, and they definitely had no trouble playing against the older girls. We hope to see them go far again next year.

On the 30th August, a group of year 9’s and 10’s competed in the Girls State Soccer Competition. After a disappointing result in the first game (0-0 to Lavalla) the girls went on to win their next games 8-0 and 5-0. After impressive performances in the first 2 levels of the competition, the team were unlucky to miss out on the state final by just one goal.

Well done to of our year 8 Basketball teams who recently competed in their Division Competition at Coburg Stadium. All of our teams had some competitive matches, with both of our A teams playing off in the finals. After having convincing wins all day, came up against Preston in the final who were too strong for Northcote. Our boy's team had more success in winning an exciting match against Lalor. The boys now move through to Regionals which is to be played in Term 4. A big thank you to our Students coaches Rocket, Lewis, Toby and Sofie from Yr 10 and Jack and Will from Yr 9. Thanks also to Cathy Lester for all of help and dedication to Basketball for all year levels.
Wednesday of Week 9 the Year 8s sent a team of six to Table Tennis for inter-school sport. The Northcote team did fantastically, winning two rounds and coming extremely close to winning a third again Reservoir High School. It came down to an extremely tight doubles game between NHS and RHS, which was exciting to watch. Although NHS will not be able to continue through to the next round, the day was still a success. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and represented the school excellently. Great job to the Year 8 Table Tennis Team!

On Friday the 9th of September, the Year 7 Divisional Basketball Competition was held at Coburg Basketball Stadium. The year 7 boys A team played their first game against Reservoir and smashed it winning 53-4. Next, they took on Thornbury. It was neck and neck throughout the whole game. Luckily, they won 17-10 meaning they would finish top of their pool. In the grand finale, they came up against Preston. In the end they won 37-14 and played exceptional winning the divisional competition. It was a great day out and awesome to see Northcote High compete so well.

Congratulations to all of our Yr 7 Basketball teams, they all played some fantastic matches and should be proud of themselves. Once again thank you to our awesome students coaches we could not have run the junior basketball without their help – Zoe P, Pheobe, Willow, Jess Mck from Yr 9, Zoe H and Sofia from yr 10 and Eve from Yr 11.
A late report from our tournament a couple of weeks ago. We had three teams compete for the divisional title with Intermediate Boys and Girls and a Year 8 mixed team needing a win to progress to regionals. The Day started with the Intermediate Girls winning 7-2 against Thornbury in an impressive performance. The Intermediate Boys team followed that match with a comprehensive 10-1 demolishing of Preston. The tightest game of the day was saved until last with the Year 8 mixed team scrapping a 1-0 win which could easily have gone either way. All regional rounds are early in term 4.

Once again we are nearing the end of another busy term. Yr 7 Table Tennis is our last sport to compete for Term 3 when they head out to Coburg tomorrow to represent our school. We wish them well and will have a pic and write up in the first newsletter for Term 4. Next term we see some of our teams competing in Regionals and State. We also have Futsal coming up so keep an eye out for training on compass.
Thank you to all of the wonderful staff and students for helping us make sport at NHS a fantastic experience. Have a great break.
