Specialised Football Program

It has been a busy few weeks for students in the Specialised Football Program with a number of knock out games being played in a range of SSWA and ACC Competitions.

Football has been all the talk lately with the Women's World Cup being held in Australia and the Matildas progressing to the Round of 16. SSWA and ACC have joined forces for a World Cup style format for the Junior and Senior girls competitions, with both our teams winning their ACC group and qualifying for the competition. This program teaches students that if you're good enough, age doesn't matter - you will be given an opportunity. We have a number of Year 7 boys representing the Intermediate team and a number of Year 8 and 9 students representing in the Senior teams.

Match Reports

SSWA Junior Girls: Quarter-Final vs Mercy

The SSWA Junior girls played on Monday in Week 3 away at Mercy. The girls played extremely well but unfortunately went down 4-2. We were down 2-0 early as the girls adapted to play on a big field, with Caitlin Creighton standing out in the first half with a number of big saves. We were able to bring it back to 2-1 at half time with Mary Massoud scoring after some nice combination play in the midfield. A slight change of formation had us on the front foot, but unfortunately the girls couldn't take advantage of their play and conceded on the counter attack. We bounced straight back and Mary Massoud scored a nice solo goal to keep us in the game. As the game neared the end, we sent more numbers forward leaving us exposed at the back where Mercy scored another goal. The game ended at 4-2.

SSWA Senior Girls: Quarter-Final vs Lynwood

The SSWA Senior girls played on Thursday in Week 2 away at Lynwood. The team, made up of a number of Year 8, 9 and 10 students, were up to the challenge coming up against an older team of Year 11 and 12 students. It was a great game and the girls certainly put their best foot forward. Whilst the result didn't go our way going down 4-0, the future is looking bright for this team in the year's to come.

ACC Senior Girls: Quarter-Final vs Frederick Irwin

The ACC Senior girls played on Tuesday in Week 3 at home against Frederick Irwin. With the new building construction restricting play on our main pitch, this was our only home game of the year. Whilst we dominated the game from start to finish, the girls went down 2-1. Football is all about taking your chances and Frederick Irwin did just that. The girls were extremely disappointed to not progress to the semi-finals but with the team mainly made up of Year 8, 9 and 10 students too, we're excited for the years to come.

ACC Senior Boys: Round of 16 vs Prendiville

The ACC Senior boys played on Wednesday in Week 2 away at Prendiville. In tough conditions, it was an extremely tense and physical game. The boys took the lead early from a free kick where our Captain, Gion Escape, took his header well and flicked it into the top corner. Our forward press was working well and we were constantly breaking down their possession. As the half went on, we started to move the ball quicker but we didn't take advantage of goal scoring opportunities.

Unfortunately, the second half was disappointing. We didn't play to our usual standards and Prendiville shortly equalised after we failed to clear our lines. We conceded a second, making similar mistakes and then went down to 10 players after retaliating to a poor tackle. We continued to battle but ultimately went down 3-1. A number of Year 12 students who have represented the College for the past 3 years depart us, and now it will be up to the next crop of players to fly the flag for the College.

SSWA Intermediate Boys: Round of 16 vs Kelmscott

The Intermediate boys played on Monday in Week 2 away at Kelmscott. In what was meant to be a home game, we had to travel to Kelmscott as our main pitch was out of action. The boys started the game on fire, the ball was bouncing and the triangles were opening up their midfield and defence. Jake Ieraci scored a goal from outside the box after some nice link up play. We were on top but if we don’t take our chances we keep the other team in the game. Darcy Brown made a world class save which was heading to the top corner to keep us in front, but shortly after they equalised after we were playing out from the back and lost possession in a dangerous area. We then took the lead to win the 2-1 and progress to the quarter-finals against Willetton.
