STEP Cosmetic Chemistry

The STEP Cosmetic Chemistry class has been busy each Monday morning led by Science Captain Jas Buckingham, making different products including micellar water, lip balm and scrubs. On Monday 19th May, the class went on an excursion to Ceechem in Braeside.  This company is a cosmetic ingredient supplier, making formulations for a number of other cosmetic companies. The owner, Paul Buckingham, talked the students through different active ingredients that are used in the industry and different processes for creating emulsions and other products.  The students dived into the chemistry involved and met two formulation chemists who work at Ceechem, who demonstrated some techniques for manufacturing these products.  The students came away with a goodie bag of different products and a deeper understanding of the chemistry and biology involved in producing moisturisers, in particular.  The chemists discussed their career paths and what kind of qualifications are required to work in the industry.   Thanks again to Ceechem for this fabulous opportunity for our budding chemists.
