Sandhurst Athletics Carnival

After being rescheduled due to wet and windy weather, the Sandhurst Athletics Competition was contested on a warm and sunny Tuesday in Week 9 of Term 3. It was a great day out with many top three placings, showcasing the talent of many of our Girton students.

We had a total of four records broken on the day, with some incredible times. These are as follows:

  • F 20Yr 3000m Abbey Reid – 10:49.50 (breaking the record by over 35 seconds)
  • F 15Yr 1500m Abbey Reid – 4:54.47 (breaking the record by over 23 seconds)

  • F 14Yr 4x100m Relay (Sophie O’Connell, Sarah Crowley, Kate Wilson, Kyah Spiteri) – 56.67

Girton finished the day with first place in the 13–16 Years Female Division, ahead of Bendigo South East College. The 13–16 Years Boys finished in second place, and Girton also finished second in the Athletics Carnival overall, which is an outstanding achievement.

Sandhurst Intermediate Basketball

Thursday 3 August saw two basketball teams compete in the Sandhurst Intermediate Sports Day held at Red Energy Arena.

Our Intermediate Girls Basketball team had a great day out, with two competitive matches, including a tough hit-out against a classy CMC side.

The Intermediate Boys Basketball side played a hard-fought game against BSE, which was to decide the Grand Final teams, and unfortunately went down by just two points. It was a nail-biting affair, with our boys showing the utmost sportsmanship despite the loss.

Thank you to our coaches, Mr McConville and Mrs Hurley, as well as Mr Norris and Ms Eenjes for organising the day.

Sandhurst Year 7 Basketball

The last Wednesday of term saw our Year 7 Basketball teams compete in the Sandhurst Year 7 Basketball Day at Red Energy Arena here in Bendigo.

The Boys team, coached by Mr Blake McConville, had a great day out, ending on three wins and two losses, which saw them finish third overall in their pool. There was lots of skill on display from the team as well as good sportsmanship, which we are very proud of.

The Girls team, coached by Mark Alabakov, ended the pool games undefeated and on top of their ladder, which saw them book a spot in the Grand Final.

The Grand Final was a physical game against a well-drilled CMC side, which ended with a final score of 2-38. The team improved immensely from Round 1 and benefitted from learning from such an experienced and well-decorated coach. We congratulate our girls on this wonderful achievement and look forward to seeing them compete again next year!

Sandhurst Year 8 Basketball

Congratulations to our Year 8 Boys and Girls Basketball teams who represented us so competitively at the Sandhurst Basketball Tournament on Monday 4 September.

The girls won four of their five pool matches, losing only one to the eventual winning team. They played very competitive basketball on the day and were wonderful ambassadors for our School.

The boys lost their final game in the group stage by one point to BSE but played an exceptional tournament, winning all three of their other matches. The future of Girton Representative Basketball looks very bright for this cohort!

Thank you to Michelle Collins and Tania Malone for scoring and Mark Alabakov for his expertise and support on the day.

Australian Short Course Championships

Further to the Victorian Age Championships, Henry Allan travelled to Sydney to compete in the Australian Short Course Swimming Championships. This event, unlike that of the Age Championships, is an open event competing against people of all ages from across the country. Despite Henry suffering a sprained ankle the day before the tournament, he continued to compete and pushed through some nasty bruising. Henry came 15th in the 200m Backstroke and 19th in the 100m Backstroke.

Congratulations Henry and well done for qualifying for the event, and swimming so well with a bruised flipper!

SSV State Table Tennis

Wednesday 9 August saw our Senior Boys and Girls Table Tennis teams make their way to MSAC to represent Girton at the SSV State Table Tennis Final.

Our Senior Boys Team, consisting of Zain Muhammad (11 Jenkin), Spencer McIntosh (11 Jenkin), Rory Scholes (10 Millward) and Louis Wood (9 Millward) competed against strong outfits from Mary Mackillop Leongatha, Southern Cross GS and East Doncaster SC.

Our Senior Girls Team, comprised of Lily Richter (11 Jenkin), Charlotte Bett (11 Aherne), Amelie Woodward (11 Jones) and Georgie Stobie (10 Riley), played against Ringwood SC, Mary Mackillop Leongatha and Suzanne Cory HS.

Congratulations to all these students. Qualifying for a State Final is an incredible achievement and we are proud of you for representing our school with such passion and pride.

Thank you to Mrs Annette Holmes, Mr Dan Williams, Mr Dean Norris and Ms Serryn Eenjes for making this day possible.

Victorian Schools Netball Competition

The hotly anticipated Victorian Schools Netball Competition was held on Tuesday 15 August at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Melbourne. This is the biggest day on the School’s netball calendar, and one which many students look forward to attending, despite the very early departure time!

Girton fielded four teams across the Primary Girls, Junior Girls, Intermediate Girls and Senior Girls Divisions, with many students competing in the competition for the first time. Our Girton teams had a great day out, competing against some of the State’s strongest school netball teams, many of which are coached by ex-State and National netball representatives!

The results of the day were as follows:

  • Primary Girls – 3 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw
  • Junior Girls – 4 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw
  • Intermediate Girls – 1 win, 6 losses
  • Senior Girls – 2 wins, 3 losses

Thank you to our coaches and organisers for the day, Ms Eenjes, Ms Holmberg, Mrs Gibson, Mrs Fisher and Mrs Hamilton.
