Girton celebrates R U OK? Day
R U OK? Day started off with a bang!
The Girton Community Action Group, together with the Wellbeing team from 65 Wattle, celebrated R U OK? Day on Tuesday 12 September. An extended lunchtime, staff versus Year 12s netball match and food stalls were all part of the festivities. With free ice-cream sundaes on offer, many students enjoyed making their own creations by topping the ice-cream with a selection of lollies – including mint leaves, Marvellous Creations (because each one of us is a marvellous creation!), mini Oreos and, of course, sprinkles. There was also a stand with lollies for sale and R U OK? Day wristbands and free stickers.
The staff versus Year 12s netball match was a great game, with the enthusiasm and speed of the Year 12 team met by the skill and determination of the staff team. After the struggle to get teachers on the court, they won the decider on which team would start with the ball, shooting at the right side of the court first, and students shooting at the left. By half-time, the teachers were well in front, with the students valiantly trying to catch up. At the final whistle, the ball was down the student’s end but nothing could save them from defeat with the teachers finishing in front: 27 to 14. It was a resounding victory on the teachers' part – congratulations teachers! Thank you to our referees on the day – Aaliyah Greenwell (8 Frew) and Dani Hodges (8 Riley).
Year 12 students vs staff rematch
Due to high demand, a rematch of the staff versus Year 12 netball match was played on Thursday 5 October. With Mr McConville’s amazing beats getting the action started and players on both sides riled up for the game, the teams decided who was to play in the first quarter. The first quarter was owned by the Year 12 students, in front 5 to 2. After a quick team swap, the second quarter started and not many goals were shot – only one from the students, making the score 6 to 2 by half-time. During the third quarter, the teachers made an amazing comeback, leaving the score at 6 to 5 with the students still in the lead. We watched Mr Edwards accidently (maybe) tackle a Year 12 to the ground, leaving the students with the ball and allowing them to score yet another goal. After the fourth quarter ended, it left the students winning 12 to 10. But ... the game was far from over! They made the poor decision to have another quarter, where the teachers tied with them, putting on their power shoes and taking the lead with three minutes remaining. The students tried to come back but ended up losing to the teachers with the final score being 14 to 12. Well done to everyone who participated and thank you to all the students and staff who played and helped to organise this match on short notice. A special thanks to our referees on the day – Aaliyah Greenwell (8 Frew) and Spencer Zan (10 Frew).
