Year 10 Business Expo

Throughout Term 2 and 3 this year, the VCE Unit 1/2 Business Management class has been working tirelessly on creating a business plan for a business that they would like to pursue in the future. They have examined all aspects of establishing a business, from finances to staffing, marketing to operations. Some of the business ideas investigated included: specialised car repairs and car detailing; nail salon; coffee van with dog supplies and accessories; sporting equipment; motorbike riding lessons; skateboard clothes and equipment; and hair salons.

The students’ plans have now been sent into the National Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition. The school has entered this national competition each year for the past 15 years and over this time Girton students have been extremely successful. One student was Runner-Up at the National level, and several other students took out the Victorian school section. This year’s students are also hoping to be successful.

To demonstrate all the students' hard work and to showcase their business plans, a Business Expo was held on Friday 8 September in the Christopher J Morey building. This Expo was a huge success, with many students and staff coming along to view the wonderful exhibits that each student had developed to showcase their business and to read and discuss each of the plans.

The Year 10 Business Management students produced high-quality business plans and exhibits for their plans, and are justifiably proud of their work.

Here are some reflections from the students:

This year’s 2023 Business Management Expo was a lot of fun, from making the business plan itself to buying the decorations and setting up my exhibit for the Expo. My favorite thing was being able to see my completed business plan and how professional it looked. I learnt time-management skills completing this project and I also learnt how stressful it would be to start up a new business and how important it is to plan your business thoroughly before beginning. (Zoe)

Throughout the business plan project my knowledge of all the procedures involved in planning a business have increased exponentially. (Xavier)

I have learnt a large range of skills in completing this business plan. It was a long and arduous process at times but it was very satisfying. (Shayaan)

From developing my business plan, I have learnt that there is a lot more preparation needed to start a business than I thought. I also learnt that there are many costs when starting a business and that there is no guarantee of success. (Rory)

I learnt to manage my time better from undertaking the business plan. The Expo enabled me to work out how to plan for an actual event and it also provided me with an opportunity to practise my public speaking. (Harry)

I learnt many valuable skills in developing my business plan. I thought the Business Expo was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the whole experience. (Summer)

Developing the business plan was difficult but very rewarding. I have learnt a lot about time management and how to start up a business. I understand the business world more now. I enjoyed the Expo and thought it was a great success. (Jack)
