Reading for Pleasure

Reading for Pleasure – Teachers lead the way

Reading for Pleasure is off to a great start at Wyndham Central College and continues in Term 2.

Students are invited to choose any text to read ‘just for the pleasure’. Reading occurs during Wyntime 2-3 times per week for 15 minutes. Each classroom has a small bookcase containing books selected by students from a large range of novels, non-fiction texts, magazines and comics held in the Learning Resource Centre.

Our Tutor teachers are very important in this exciting initiative. Tutor teachers guide, encourage and motivate students to select a book, settle down to read, continue reading for 15 minutes and interact respectfully with peers during silent reading time. Teachers often read as well, providing students with wonderful reading role models to inspire them to maintain this vital pastime.

Recently I found Mr Bur – 9A’s tutor teacher sneaking in some extra reading in the staffroom, taking a well-earned break from marking maths assessment. Ms Coster and Ms Braddy were loading up with books to top up Reading for Pleasure bookcases. Ms Wrigglesworth – 8H’s tutor teacher was sprung dipping into a book in the staffroom (yes the Staffroom has its own Reading for Pleasure bookcase too).

Thank you to all the amazing tutor teachers from year 7-12 who support our 1300 students to read every week.
