BIG SUMMER READ
1 Dec 2023 – 31 Jan 2024
State-wide reading program for kids
The BIG Summer Read is a Victorian statewide summer reading campaign for children and young people. It is a collaborative Public Libraries Victoria initiative, developed to raise awareness and ensure all Victorian children have access to resources they need to maintain literacy skills over the summer school holidays.
The BIG Summer Read is open to anyone ages 0 – 18. It aims to encourage children to read for pleasure and addresses the issue of ‘summer slide’. This refers to the loss of literacy experienced over the long summer break if children are not exposed to books or reading.
The BIG Summer Read aims to slow the slide by engaging children and their families in a fun and dynamic campaign supported by Beanstack, a user-friendly website (with an intuitive mobile app) that makes it easy to register, track reading and earn digital ‘badges’ as rewards for reaching reading milestones.
All public library services across state participate in the BIG Summer Read each year.
Registrations for the 2023- 2024 BIG Summer Read is now open.
