Visual Arts / Culture Studies - Welcome back to Term 4!

In Visual Arts, students have continued to explore a variety of Elements of Art, with a particular focus on shape, space, colour, value and texture. Students have been involved in a range of creative, hands-on activities, including drawing, collage, collaborative artworks and textiles, while developing their artistic skills and creativity.

Foundation

Foundation students explored different types of shapes and how they can be combined to create an art piece. They designed their own Shape Robot Collages, carefully selecting, arranging and gluing a variety of coloured paper shapes to create their unique robots. Students also worked together on a collaborative Rainbow Mosaic artwork. Working in small groups, each group was assigned a colour of the rainbow (ROYGBIV). Students carefully glued small squares of coloured paper onto their rainbow sections, leaving little gaps between each piece to create a mosaic effect.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students were introduced to the artist Paul Klee, who was known for his imaginative artworks featuring geometric shapes and vibrant colours. Inspired by his work, students created their own City of Shapes drawings. They used rulers to draw a variety of geometric shapes to construct buildings and cityscapes, before adding bright colours using coloured pencils.

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students explored the Element of Art Value, learning how light and dark shading can create the illusion of depth and form. They created an X-ray Hand artwork, carefully shading different areas of their hands using lighter and darker tones to achieve a three-dimensional X-ray effect. Students were also introduced to textiles and basic sewing techniques, learning how to complete a running stitch. They used these skills to create their very own Pizza Pillows. Students carefully stitched around the edges of two fabric pizza bases, leaving a small opening to add stuffing before sewing them closed. They then selected and glued colourful felt toppings onto their pizzas, creating fun and realistic-looking pizza pillows.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 students began exploring textiles and sewing techniques, learning and practising the basic running stitch. They were introduced to fibre artist Katie Gates, who creates unique and imaginative creatures using recycled fabrics and scrap materials. Inspired by her work, students began planning and creating their own Mini Oddkin Scrap Monsters. They designed individual characters, carefully selecting different fabrics, colours, patterns and textures to bring their imaginative creatures to life. Students are developing their sewing skills, creativity and problem-solving abilities while learning how everyday materials can be transformed into unique pieces of art.

We are also very excited as we continue preparing for our Le Page Primary School Art Show in Week 5! Students have been working hard throughout the year, and we cannot wait to showcase their wonderful creativity, artistic skills and achievements. We look forward to welcoming families to celebrate the amazing artwork our students have created!

Help Needed – Christmas Pom-Poms for Our Community Star! ⭐🎄

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are excited to announce that Le Page Primary School has been invited to participate in Westfield Southland’s 2026 Community Christmas Exhibition!

As part of this wonderful initiative, our school has been given a large star to decorate, which will be proudly displayed at Westfield Southland throughout the festive season.

We have decided to decorate our star with colourful Christmas pom-poms, using the festive colours of red, green, gold and silver.

We would love your help!

With our upcoming Art Show keeping us very busy, and the completed star due on Thursday 5th November, we have a short timeframe to complete this project.

Although we will try to make some pom-poms during school time, we would greatly appreciate it if families could make a few at home and send them into school.

How can you help?

  • Make pom-poms using red, green, gold or silver yarn.
  • You could even get creative and make pom-poms using Christmas tinsel!
  • Pom-poms of different sizes are welcome.
  • Send your completed pom-poms to the Art Room as soon as possible, preferably before Friday 30th October.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and families to work together on a collaborative artwork that will be enjoyed by the wider community.

Thank you so much for your support and creativity. We look forward to seeing our beautiful Christmas star come to life!

Kind regards,Shelley & Zehra

PE

As we transition from Winter to Spring and then onto Summer, we started the first two weeks with a unit of Cricket. A great summer traditional sport in Australia. While this is going on Australia is playing South Africa in a test series so it’s good timing.

All classes from Prep to year 6 have been learning the basic skills of fielding, throwing, catching and bowling. The focus on our fielding was to use soft hands to catch the ball, which I teach by using simple analogies eg. Make your hands into a birds nest, and let the ball (egg) land in the nest. We focus on catching balls around our waists and also catching balls above our head.

We then had a focus on working with a partner with short underarm throws and then extending to longer over arm throws, with the older students being challenged to throw from one end of the basketball court to the other. The main idea was to use more power/force with our throws and focus on throwing accurately to our partner.

We finished the lessons learning to bowl. One of the hardest skills to learn, you need to bowl with a straight arm.

The cues for this includes:

  1. Little star
  2. Big Star
  3. Rock (star)
  4. Roll
  5. And step.

Most students were great at following these cues and were able to bowl with a straight arm, it became more challenging to keep a straight arm when a game was introduced. The game of ‘Bob the Builder’, where students work together as a team to bowl and try and hit the stumps as many times as they can. Because this is a fast paced game, some students found it difficult to keep their arm straight.

Overall, it has been a really positive start to term 4, and all students had been working well together and trying really hard, while most importantly having a good time.

Kingston Division Softball Competition

This Friday 16th October, both our boys and girls team will be competing at the Division Softball competition. The girls went automatically through to this round after winning the lightning premiership at the end of term 2, while the boys got a second chance after finishing second at the lightning premiership and were lucky enough to get offered a position after another school pulled out.

Both boys and girls in years 5 and 6 in the team have been doing a lot of training in the past 2 weeks and are in a good position to do well at this competition.

We wish both teams good luck for this competition and to enjoy the day.

Music

Music Newsletter - Term 4, Week 2

Welcome back to another action packed term in Music! This term we will be getting ready for the Christmas Extraveganser which is being held in Week 10. It will be an amazing event and will bring together many of the amazing projects that students have been working on this year. Students across years 2 - 6 will be sharing the commercials that they have been making over the last two terms. Students in Prep and Year 1 will be singing along to a mixture of pop and Christmas songs and the year 5 and 6 students will be sharing their compositions created on Garageband.

Prep

In week one, the students in Prep began by preparing for the concert at the Kingston Green Retirement Living Facility. They sang a range of songs including, Geronimo and Let Me Down Easy by Sheppard, Try Everything by Shakira and Hall of Fame by The Script. We were also delighted to have Bonnie from Year 1 singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow which was a highlight for many of the residents. They did an incredible job memorising the lyrics, performing the actions and singing with confidence and positivity. Over the next 8 weeks, the students will begin learning songs in preparation for the Christmas Extravaganza and also a number of Christmas Carols which we are hoping to share with the residents of the Kingston Green Retirement Living Facility later this Term.

Year 1

Students in Year 1 began learning a number of new songs this fortnight that they will be performing in week 10 as part of the Christmas Extravaganza. In addition to practising the songs, students in Year 1 will be exploring different genres of music. Beginning with classical music, students will investigate what makes each genre of music unique and learn sing and perform in those styles of music.

Year 2

This term, the students in Year 2 have begun filming their commercials as part of their unit of learning about Multimedia. They have completed their storyboards and will aim over the next 3-4 weeks to film, edit and refine their commercials before an afternoon showcase later this term. Upon completion of the commercials, the Year 2 students will begin learning a couple of songs which they will be performing at the Christmas Extravaganza.

Year 3 and 4

It has been amazing to watch the students in Year 3 and 4 finalise their storyboards and begin filming and, in some cases, editing their commercials. They are very much looking forward to sharing their commercials with all year 3 and 4 classes later this term. Like the other year levels, they will also be preparing some songs to sing at the Christmas Extravaganza.

Year 5 and 6

The Year 5 and 6 students have done an amazing job writing and composing their songs using Garageband. Over the next few weeks, students will continue writing and refining their songs and record their vocals in weeks 4 and 5. In addition to their music composition, the year 5 and 6 students will be choreographing a dance. This will be an exciting project and will be presented in the style of a dance video later this term.
