Terrific 2

Year 2 Newsletter
Term 4 Week 2 2026 - Friday, October 16th.
Welcome back to Term 4! We are quickly heading towards the end of our school year. This year really has flown by so quickly. We have a very busy term with incursions and two excursions. We will also be busy with student testing, parent teacher interviews, student reports and determining class lists for next year. This will happen towards the very end of Term 4 and students will be thoughtfully allocated to classes. We very carefully consider what is best for each student when determining their classrooms for the following year.
What have we been up to?
In Literacy, we are learning about Persuasive Text. We have been reading the texts, ‘I Wanna Iguana’ and ‘I Wanna New Room.’ The year 2s have been learning how to write letters also. How do we set out our letter/email? What is required to write a formal letter? Last week the students wrote fantastic letters to Mr Danson asking for a class pet. The letters needed to contain the date, the salutation, reasons for writing the letter, the arguments/justifications why we should have a new classroom, and then finally to respectfully sign off with the appropriate wording and their names. The students wrote some amazing letters with very valid reasoning. This week we are writing letters to Mr Danson asking for a new classroom. We do not need new classrooms! It is just a component of our unit on persuasive text and relevant to the books that we have been studying.
Another lovely thing that we have observed is the enjoyment that our students are experiencing with their library books. We have many passionate readers in year 2! They love to get their books out and read them as often as they can. It has also been wonderful to observe the increase in reader levels!
This term, we are exploring the following in phonics:
| Week | Rule | Example |
| 1 | Open syllables | Paper, baby, female |
| 2 | Open syllables | Bonus, hotel, radio |
| 3 | Open syllables vs rabbit pattern | Super vs supper, diner vs dinner, hoping vs hopping |

| 5 | I not at the end (y) | Supply, empty, worry |
| 6 | I not at the end (y) | Dirty, cuddly, bouncy |
| 7 | I not at the end (y) | Activity, ability, memory |
| 8 | 111 rule* | Run-> running, scrub-> scrubbing, hit-> hitting |
| 9 | 111 rule* | Fog-> foggy, creep-> creepy, drip -> dripping |
| 10 | 111 rule * | Swim-> swimming, spot-> spotty, plug->plugged |
| 11 | 111 rule and homophones | Drip -> dripped, clap-> clapped |
*The 1-1-1 rule
The 1-1-1 spelling rule helps students know when to double the final consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel, such as -ing, -ed or -er.
A word follows the rule when it has:
- 1 syllable
- 1 vowel (a short vowel sound)
- 1 consonant at the end
If all three conditions are met, double the final consonant before adding the suffix.
In Maths, we are learning about fractions. We have been discussing halves and quarters and eighths. Fractions can be a challenging concept to grasp but it can be introduced into daily conversations at home. Is that orange cut in half or quarters? Simple reinforcement of mathematical concepts can greatly assist in developing children’s understanding. We have been using counters for hands-on activities in Maths. The year 2 students really enjoy hands-on activities and it really helps to facilitate their learning.
In Inquiry, we will be learning about the physical sciences - sound, light, push and pull. This will commence next week.
On Friday, this week, we will be having an incursion all day. It is all about biodiversity. The students will have a variety of experiences, both indoors and outdoors, learning about all areas of biodiversity. It will be a great day filled with lots of learning!
Important reminders:
- Hats are required in Term Four please. They are to be worn at all times when outdoors. We encourage water bottles to be bought each day especially with the warmer weather.
- We are continuing to send take home readers each week. Your child will not be able to take home a book without a reading satchel. If your child does not have one, please reach out to your classroom teacher. If you have any further feedback or questions regarding take home readers, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher.
Please feel free to reach out to your classroom teacher if you have any questions.
Thank you for your support,
The year 2 team!
