Grade 2 Camping Themed Day  

On Tuesday 15 September, the Grade 2 students enjoyed a Camping Themed Day in preparation for Grade 3 camp next year.

To help bring the experience to life, the Secondary Library was transformed into a campsite, complete with tents, campfires, scenic backdrops, twinkling lights, LED candles and lanterns. The creative setting made the students feel as though they had stepped into a real camping adventure for the day. 

The day began with making delicious S’mores, followed by procedural writing where students carefully explained the steps for making their tasty treats. Students then explored camping vocabulary through alphabetical ordering, a crossword and a word search, building their language skills while having fun. The literacy session concluded with some peaceful, independent reading as students snuggled into their tents and enjoyed their chapter books. 

The Grade 2s enjoyed a special praise and worship session, creating a magical camping atmosphere with torches, glow-in-the-dark stars and glow sticks. They sang This Little Light of Mine and reflected on how they can be a light to others. 

The Maths session brought camping into the classroom as students explored camp budgeting, data collection and data representation. They worked with money and made decisions just as they might when planning for a real camping adventure. 

The day concluded with a STEM challenge. Working in groups, students had to design and construct a mini tent that would keep the items inside completely dry. They then headed outside to test their designs, pouring water over their tents to see how well their waterproofing worked! 

It was a wonderful day filled with learning, collaboration, problem-solving, friendship and plenty of fun. The students showed fantastic teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the day and are certainly getting excited for Grade 3 camp next year.
