Year 8 Poetry

Year 8 Poetry Unit
In their final unit for the term, our Year 8 students have been exploring poetry, experimenting with a range of poetic devices and structures, including both rhyming forms and free verse. Below is a selection of poems created by our talented Year 8 writers.
Deep Blue
You see the photos, the videos, the view from above,
But never will you see inside, the part I never speak of.
It’s calm and cold, a quiet keep,
Yet one small storm can wake the deep.
The water whispers, soft and sly,
It hums, it howls, then drifts on by.
You take a leap, you glide through blue,
Chasing a peace you never knew.
You make a wave, that fleeting craves,
A spark of joy you cannot save.
Set the boat ablaze, let the embers gleam,
But fire fades fast in an ocean dream.
The waves whoosh, the wind will wail,
The sea keeps secrets, pale unveiled.
My thoughts are tides, my heart’s a reef,
Each crash and calm reflects belief.
The rays still dance, the planes still fly,
Above my depths where secrets lie.
They search for me like stars through mist,
But I’m the storm the sun once kissed.
For I am the ocean, wild, unseen,
Where light and shadow blur between.
As endless as night, as fierce as a fight,
The deep, unexplored oh, what a sight.

Yummy party pies, Tim Tams and sausage rolls
From a trip to good old Aussie Coles
Hip hop goes the red roos
Resting in the sizzling sun under the Aussie blues
Only thongs for shoes
The cricket ball rolls through the dust
Zooper Doopers are a must
The endless horizon is my body
Our language can be bloody
Bloody good, bloody ripper, bloody beauty
Good day mate!
My Australian roots are to celebrate
Grab a snag and hat from Bunnings
Our history is stunning
The sun is our memories
So won’t you come dance
To the Australian lullaby for centuries
The hush night falls
The kookaburra laugh rolls
We laugh we play
We are all family so we say
We are proud, we are brave, we are Australia
We call as the gumtree sways
Our land stands tall
Our souls rest in the land
Everyone is welcomed to the Australian red sand
You are Australia
I am Australia

The Hot Springs
I step onto the oak floor,
Steam runs through the cracks,
As rain starts to pour
Dark and rough trees
Bowing to me as I go through the entry
Pools steaming with salt
And plunges deep and icy
They can’t stop enticing me
I feel like a tree
Still as its base
And the wind waving around my face
Fizzy, muddy and salty
Red, rocky and real
This is what feels comforting
Sitting by the mountainside
Flushing out my thoughts
I am an aquanaut
Feeling the breeze
Entering into ease
The scent of burning wood
And each breath dry as a bone
As water evaporates on stone
I smell the greenery
Hills that breathe green air
The garden expressing its colours
As I stand in this place
My voice bounces along the wall
My voice resonating
As my words sound mispronounced
My feet soothed by the hot concrete
Looking at the sunset thinking this was a real treat
