Year 3/4 News

Year 3 Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2! We have hit the ground running and students have been busy getting back into the groove of school. During Week 1, The OLSC community gathered and remembered our fallen service men and women during our ANZAC service. Students even baked some ANZAC biscuits.
Religion
We began the term by making links with events in Jesus’ life and the parts of the Catholic Mass. The students were able to explain who the characters, events and setting are in the story The Road to Emmaus.
Athletics Day
On Monday 27th of April, OLSC participated in our Whole School Athletics Day. It was great to see so many of our students getting in and having a go, well done to all for a great day. Thanks to Michelle and the village of helpers who made the day such a success.
Literacy
In Week 1, we explored ANZAC and its significance to Australia’s history. Students wrote letters to the soldiers who were on the battlefields, they wrote a procedure explaining how we made ANZAC Biscuits, and on Friday, they reflected on the poem 'Poppies in Flanders Field'.
For the remainder of the term, our Year 3 students will be reading and unpacking Roald Dahl’s Matilda. This week we predicted what might happen, who the characters we may encounter are, as well as exploring new vocabulary.
Maths
We began Term 2 exploring patterns, using number patterns, and some shape patterns, to show what we know. This week we have started learning about multiplication and division. Students are exploring 2s, 3s and 5s whilst challenging themselves with 10s.
Inquiry
This term, we are unpacking and learning more about Australia’s past and the role the First Nations People played. To support our learning, we are currently viewing passages from 'My Place', where Australia’s story is told visually for children.
In Week 4, we are off to the Melbourne Museum - more information will be shared early next week.
Reminders:
Students are to bring their laptops and headphones to school each day. Please make sure these are fully charged. Make sure that all your children's belongings (clothes, lunch boxes, drink bottles, stationery, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child's name. Labelled property can be easily returned to its owner.
Please make sure you jump onto the parent portal and give permission for your child to attend our excursion to the Melbourne Museum. If you are able to assist on the day, please reach out to your child/rens teacher via Dojo.
Year 4 - Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2. We hope that you have all had a restful holiday and are ready for a big term ahead. Our 4W and 4B students have nicely settled into the LC3 learning space, and this has been pleasing to see.
Religion
In Religion, the students have been learning how Jesus modelled the liturgical actions followed at Mass. They explored scripture stories such as Feeding of the Five Thousand, and The Road to Emmaus. The students had opportunities to draw and explain the meaning of different symbols associated with the Eucharist.
Our First Eucharist candidates participated in a Eucharist Spirituality Day. The students learned how to integrate the grace and sacrifice of the Mass into everyday life, and transform daily routines into a continuous act of thanksgiving and worship.
Wellbeing
The OLSC Athletics Day on Monday 27th April, was a huge success with full participation from all students. Please take a look at the photos from the day where students participated in a number of events including; 100 and 200m run, hurdles, javelin, discus, shot put, sack race and even a three-legged race. The day was an opportunity for our students to apply their Positive Behaviours for Learning as active participants in each event.
Literacy
Although we had a short first week of Term 2, we learned about Anzac Day in our Literacy lessons for reading and writing. This made the event relevant to the everyday lives of students through the sharing of text to self connections and significant symbols to commemorate the day.
We started to read The Wild Robot as a whole class. Students were engaged in reading the beginning of the book through listening and learning about the grammar used in this language-rich text. They looked forward to discovering more about the exciting events involving the different characters. Students have continued using the PhOrMeS program to strengthen their word reading, spelling, and overall language learning skills.
Maths
The students have been learning about 2D Shape. They have explored how two-dimensional shapes can be described and classified by their properties; shapes and patterns can have one or more lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry. The students had the opportunity to use an interactive program called, ‘Polypad’ to create symmetrical patterns and pictures.
Inquiry
We have started our Design Technologies unit with an introduction to the OLSC Design Process. The students worked in collaborative groups to explore a range of problems that have led to a design solution. They identified the cause of the problem, brainstormed ways the problem was solved, applied drawing skills to show a prototype solution to the problem, and evaluated the effectiveness of the solution.
Reminders
Students are to bring their laptops and headphones to school each day. Please make sure these are fully charged. Make sure that all your children's belongings (clothes, lunch boxes, drink bottles, stationery, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child's name. Labelled property can be easily returned to its owner.
