Literacy

What have we been learning in our Literacy lessons at OLSC?
Prep - The Prep students have been learning about playing fairly and being respectful of our friends at school. To help them understand what a positive friendship looks like, they read the book 'Bear and Duck are Friends' by Sue deGennaro. While reading the book, the teachers introduced some important vocabulary to the children, encouraging students to share about a time they felt enthusiastic and also when they've been cautious, just like Bear and Duck.
Year 1/2s - Last week, the 1/2 students read some stories that focused on ANZAC Day. They listened to 'The ANZAC Billy' by Claire Saxby and thought about how families connected with their loved ones who were away at war. This week has seen a shift to 'Iggy Peck, Architect' by Andrea Beaty. Today, the children had a go at designing a new cubby house for the school yard, just like architects do.
Year 3s - This term, the students in Year 3 will be reading 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl for their novel study. They listen to their teachers read the story aloud and then share their thoughts about the characters and events in the book. This week, they learnt about how to use the conjunctions because, but and so to join two simple sentences together.
Year 4s - Our Year 4 students have also begun their novel study, reading the book 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown and they are already hooked. Through this story, they have been practicing using subordinating conjunctions (eg: before, after, even though, since) and how to complete a sentence by adding a dependent clause to an independent clause.
Year 5s - Last term, the Year 5 classes completed the novel 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo. Over these last two weeks, they have been comparing the novel to the picture story book of the same story. They began by analysing the illustrations and have been sharing their point of view about the book by completing a book review.
Year 6s - To begin Term 2, the senior students have been reading the picture book 'Meerkat Mail' by Emily Gravett. This story focuses on communicating with family and friends through the forms of letters and post cards. This term, the Year 6s are writing letters to students who live in Japan and they are very much looking forward to receiving letters in return.

Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge
At the end of Term 1, our students received their unique login details for the Victorian
Premiers' Reading Challenge (VPRC), and so many of them have been fervently reading and logging their books. It has been wonderful to see the excitement building about the Challenge. I have spoken to students across year levels who are reading passionately at school and at home.
The Challenge finishes in September, so there is plenty of time for everyone to join in and reach their target. If your child isn't sure of their username and password, please see their teacher or email me at the address below.
